Chapter one

"Fucking embarrassment" My father said he shut the door behind him, He didn't slam it but he closed it harder then he needed too

“That was a shit show” He said and aggressively took his coat off and tossed it across the room almost hitting my mom who sat down on the couch

“Why can’t for one night be normal” Father said to me and stomped into the kitchen and popped open a beer and started drinking

We went to a party hosted by one of my fathers business partners; It was very traditional. Men wore black suits with splashes of colors like red, blue, or purple; While the women wore dresses that were professional but also accentuated their bodies.

Mom was in the corner keeping to herself. She didn’t like parties and father knew that but forced her to wear a blue dress that she hated but since it was his business partner's favorite color he forced her to wear it.

Father was talking to a group of men who I’ve never seen before, I was left alone, Mom's anxiety made her impossible to talk to and father was acting like I didn’t exist.

I was also the only teenager at the party, Everyone else's child was either in college or too young to attend and were at home with family or a babysitter.

The party didn’t have meals but did have catering of small finger sized foods, I took a martini glass that had shrimp around it with cocktail sauce inside.

I was eating while people were watching when suddenly I started to choke, I tried to stay quiet, even tried walking out of the room but I couldn’t.

I fell to the floor breaking the glass cup and spilling everything on the carpet, I still can hear the gasp of shock as everyone saw me fighting for my life.

I was gasping for air while holding my neck, choking on the floor, A random man came behind me, picked me up and gave me the Heimlich.

The shrimp came out and fell on the floor, I was breathing heavily. The man let me go and once I compused myself  I thanked him.

Obviously my near-death experience made the mood of the party shift. My father found my mother took both our hands, apologized to the host, and we drove home in complete silence.

I was hoping that I would just be sent to my room and punished in the morning but that dream died the second the door was closed.

“You caused a whole scene just too embarrassed me” Father growled at me while taking more sips of his beer

“It was an accident” I told him trying to keep my emotions at bay, I learn very early in life he hates seeing me cry

“Accident? Bullshit! You're 14 a damn near adult and you don’t know how to chew your damn food” He screamed at me and walked out of the kitchen and into the living room where mom was reading one of her books

“And you! Where the fuck were you?” Father said screaming at my mom who just looked at him confused

“What?” Mom asked genuinely confused

“Why weren’t you watching him? You have one job and it’s to look over him and you can’t even do that right!” Father screamed t her drinking more

“You mean about him choking?” Mom asked which seemed to make father even angrier

“Yes you idiot” He said more tired and defeated then mad

I always hated how he talked to her but all I could do was watch. Leaving would make things worse for her; and saying something would make it worse for me.

“What sin did I committed did I get to be in this fucking family” Father muttered to himself but was loud enough for both me and mom to hear which he knew

He then walked upstairs and this time slammed the door to him and mom's bedroom.

“He’ll be asleep soon, then I’ll order us a pizza, I promise to watch you very good while you eat this time” Mom smiled with a light laugh as she flipped to the next page in her book

“Thank you mom” I told her and tiptoed to my room; Once I was inside I gently closed the door and changed out of my nice clothes into some sweats and a tank top

I grabbed my phone and started listening to an audiobook as it played. I grabbed my notepad and sat down at my desk that was facing my window and started drawing.
