It has been two days since the bomb at the bridge and there were no further signs of retaliation from the grounders which only spooked me further. Raven is making landmines for outside the gate, it is really starting to feel like war is brewing.
I see Clarke and Bellamy standing just outside the gate where other delinquents were working and approach them just as Clarke is saying, "I can't believe we survived 100 years just so we could slaughter each other."
"It's really shitty, yeah. But that's what humanity is, right? Destined to destroy itself" I make my entrance.
"That's a cheerful thought" Bellamy sarcastically remarks.
"All I'm saying is there has to be another way" Clarke's steely gaze into the distance holds.
"Any word from the Ark?" Bellamy asks.
"No" I answer as I had just checked in with Raven who had the radio.
"Radio silence" Clarke confirms.
"Finally ran out of air..." Bellamy thinks aloud.
"That means they probably fell asleep before they kicked it, right? From lack of oxygen. So it couldn't have been too bad of a death, right?" I try to reassure myself as I think of all the small children that I used to see run the halls of the Ark.
Clarke shoots me a sympathetic glance as my eyebrows continue to furrow in concern.
"Like going to sleep at night" She smiles at me. I can't help the warm feeling that spreads in my chest from this. "Maybe my mom was lucky though, being on the exodus ship. At least it was quick. No one's coming down to save us."
--------
The day continued on with no sign of the grounders still. I was hanging meat in the meat shack with Octavia, talking about how we wished their was seasoning down here.
"Like all I'm asking is for some salt and pepper, bare minimum!" I finish my rant.
"I hear you" She smiles. "Even though I was living below the floor, Bellamy always made sure to give me the best rations."
"Let's get this party smoking!" A boy named Del throws more wood onto the already roaring fire and I eye him wearily.
"You don't want to make the fire too big so maybe just try to knock it down with some wet leaves" Octavia suggests kindly.
"You get that from your boyfriend, grounder pounder?" He pushes.
"What was that?" My head snap to him, my fists clenching. Octavia grabs my wrist, warning me not to do anything stupid.
"She's right" Murphy interjects before I deck the boy in the face. "A hot fire is not gonna preserve the meat as well."
For once Murphy is actually being helpful, doesn't mean I hate him any less though.
"You can't take the heat, get out of the smokehouse."
"Ok, you're acting like an idiot, if you're gonna do the job wrong then you shouldn't be here, go chop wood or something, Del!" I snap at him. The heat of the fire may be getting to me as bullets of sweat run down my forehead.
"Don't even start with me freak, yeah I heard about your seizure, you're probably gonna drop dead before the grounders even get to you" He spits. "And Murphy you should be kissing our asses for being allowed back in this camp."
This time I have to hold Octavia back at the jab he made at me. I just roll my eyes at the boy. It's not like im insecure that I had a seizure. A little worried? Yes. But not as worried as I am about the imminent threat of grounders.
