VI. THE FIRST SIGN

Dahlia had grown bored of Luke and Reggie after a while, lounging on the uncomfortable couch listening as they tried out new riffs and tunes that matched the lyrics from her songbook.

After around forty five minutes, Dahlia could feel herself growing sleepy with boredom, retreating to the comfort of her bedroom.

She was grateful her father was busy with his photography today, otherwise he definitely would've noticed she was home before the school day was over.

She snuggled into her comforters, pulling out her laptop as she mindlessly scrolled through clothing websites, looking to see what was stylish and on sale.

Throughout her time shopping, she heard Julie come home, then she heard her bedroom door slam. Just as she sat upright to see what was the matter, she heard a 'poof' sound a few feet away from her bed, looking up to meet Luke's over excited expression.

"Hey, Li," he greeted with a playful grin, and Dahlia looked at him and scoffed.

"No way. We're not doing nicknames. Especially not Li, that's so stupid." She huffed, though couldn't help but find the ghost in front of her amusing as she shut her laptop and placed it on her nightstand.

"Whatever you say," Luke trailed off for a moment, before looking back to her cheekily and adding, "Li."

Dahlia groaned, grabbing a throw pillow from beside her and chucking it at Luke's head. The guitarist flinched, though teased her when the pillow went straight through him, knocking over a pile of books on her dresser.

Dahlia couldn't help but smile as Luke looked at her, his hazel eyes crinkling as he sat at the edge of her bed, fiddling with his thumbs like a kicked puppy.

"So..." he started, sighing dramatically, "the guys and I were thinking about inviting Julie to join Sunset Curve. I mean, you already said yes to trying out the whole songwriting thing, but then Julie just said no and stormed away." Luke said, and Dahlia crossed her arms.

"Somehow I feel like there's more to the story," she said, the words slipping off her tongue as Luke shrunk into himself.

"Well...maybe Reggie and I got bored after you left, then we may or may not have gone through her dream box and found this poem she wrote...and then we turned it into a song which she didn't seem to appreciate, so then she chased me around the room and was already mad about what happened with Flynn and—" Luke was talking a mile a minute as Dahlia struggled to understand what he was saying.

About a minute and a half into his rant, he realized he was blabbing on and his lips shut themselves immediately.

"Sorry." He mumbled, and Dahlia shrugged.

"I'm not the one you should apologize to," she began, rubbing at her temples, "just apologize to Julie. I'm sure she's already upset about what happened with Flynn, and knowing she had two teenage boys going through her things just didn't help."
