True Love

the old adage goes, celebrating
antiquated knights in their glittery armour,
the Petrarchan lover,
putting tooth and limb on the line
in a show of gallant heroism,
raring to give, give, give.
Such is true love - unrequited sacrifice.

My pretty princess, all I dreamt of
was to one day become that knight of old,
shielding you from torrential storms, vicious monsters.
Dreams of childish chivalry, mindless forfeiture -
because I sacrificed nothing to love you,
and yet I offer all of me to you, love.
