Have you ever wanted to enjoy the hustle and bustle of life? Then maybe Okusan by Masakazu Ooi will be the motivation to help you.

Summary

Follow the adventures of big and beautiful Kyouko Okita, or Okusan for short, as she engages in the woes of being a housewife for her "darling" in a new apartment complex.

Characters

Okusan: Our starstruck heroine, Okusan, despite her age, is an enthusiastic, flirtatious, proud, ditzy, clumsy, naive, and self-conscious about her appearance. Beyond all this, though, she has a spectacularly devoted passion for her "Daa-san," or husband for short. A lot of her daily routine is motivated by him, though her constant desire to surprise can lead to some chaos down the line.

Overview.

I don't get many chances to show off my "cultured" side, so let's say this spotlight contains so much "sauce" you'll need extra pans. Okusan is about as humdrum a slice of life/romance can get. If any of my fans are looking to get serviced too, don't you worry because the series provides a lot of that too?

Okusan's thick, huge, titillating... heart makes her a genuinely fun protagonist despite the many pratfalls, wardrobe mishaps, and embarrassing accidents life throws her way. That doesn't mean Okusan and Darling are the only pair of boobies in this hatch (Look it up). Throughout the series, we get a wide variety of fellow housewives and kids peppering the neighborhood.

While not all of them are the most interesting, special shoutouts to the petite bossy cheapskate housewife Nonomiya, they do a good job at milking out some great interactions overall. Speaking of intriguing interactions, though, I got to match tit for tat and talk about the elephant in the room.

Despite always singing his praises like yee tit birds of old, we never get to see Darling's face, which is intentional. While I don't have the author's notes, it's pretty clear the whole point is in an attempt to make Darling a self-insert for fans to slide into, Okusan, literally meaning the Japanese honorific for wife, adds a lot to the theory.

This is, like, really weird because Darling is the tits. But, like all immature, badly written, 12-year-old pleasing innuendo jokes aside, I don't know how well that works. Because later on, not only do we get confirmation on Darling's job in construction but also his relationships between his boss and mother.

His actions and dynamic with Okusan give us a decently solid character with a full life. The underlying love often demonstrated between the two is so wholesome that the more suggestive moments don't turn me on or off from the series. Especially when we see Okusan's genuinely positive effect on everyone she touches (or knocks into).

Couple that with the genuinely developing relationship with her husband, strong jokes, running gags, and well-established continuity; you have a whole smorgasbord of reasons to get charmed by this hearty housewife. All wrapped in a cutesy art style befitting a senien.

Epilogue

Look, I'm sorry for the bad puns this time; when you do over a hundred and twenty-five reviews, you either break your brain or your sense of humor. Still, even though this is by far the most sexual series I've ever covered, surprisingly, Okusan has a lot to enjoy. There's a genuinely sweet story and ensemble underneath here, plus the monthly updates mean it won't be the hardest series to catch up on.

The author has another series like this, so maybe in the future, I'll spin the spotlight there. But, until then, I think it's time for me to slice up some melons and enjoy what the light shines on next.
