Built off the backs of various writers and artists from Webtoon, we offer Shriek: an anthology of the most horrible ghost stories. Armed with the latest animations and musical elements, Shriek will surely give you a chilling first read as the characters experience their last day.
Overview
Like before with anthology series, I can't describe characters who only get one chapter apiece. What I can say, though, is that Shriek is a bit of a throwback for me in terms of webtoons. Shriek released most of the stories in 2016, where they are still experimenting with webtoons, sites, and guidelines.
As such, every chapter of Shriek uses fun animations and background music to help add Foley or life to static images. Cool features. I wish I saw more in Webtoons, but I'm happy whenever it shows up. Still, for the short 17-chapter run, we get a wide variety of stories.
We get some cool variations from last-minute twists, unlucky circumstances, and foreboding cautionary tales. My personal favorites are probably The Red Woman's Forest by Rangddo for its fun twist and child-like art style, Best Friends by Sejun Park/Jae Li Ho for having the most complex story in my eyes, and The Past Life Game by DEY for arguably having the most chilling imagery.
On the flip side, my least favorite stories include Tinnitus by Yoonjin Choi and Missing by Hoonjon Choi for being a bit too mean-spirited for my liking. Either way, reading these stories at 3 am will create chaos.
Epilogue
I know this is the shortest webtoon spotlight in a minute, but like I said before, anthology series are a little more complicated to talk about. Nevertheless, I hope this and the surrounding spotlights do a good job transitioning from this year to the next. There are still many more stories to cover, and I hope you're all there to see them.
2023 was a challenging year for me in both writing and life, but I think 2023 got me closer to the man I want to be. So here's hoping all the writing and the work will be worth it. Because I truly hope that the light shines on us all in 2024.
