Phil's POV
We were minutes away from Jackson, and we were on horseback. I sat with Ellie, while Tommy and Dina sat on their horses. Ellie turned to me and said
"When we get back to Jackson, don't go home, I have to do something"
"What do you have to do?" I asked
"You will see" She replied without giving me any clues
Before long, we arrived in Jackson
"I'll see you later okay?" Said Ellie
"Okay, see you later" I replied
So I went with Tommy, we headed for his house
"So how are you going to explain it to Maria, I mean about the eye" I asked, since he had a black eye after the fight with Abby
"Well, that's why I brought you with me. And I still have the necklace" He took it out and we started giggling
"Okay, she told me to bring you back in one piece, and you still seem to me to have all the pieces in place. So I guess it's okay" I said as we arrived at her house
I knocked on the door
"Maria, it's Phil" I shouted
He quickly arrived to open the door and saw Tommy
"Oh my god Tommy" Maria said as she saw Tommy all hurt
We went in and she fixed him up as best she could, then they started talking
"What were you thinking of doing?" Maria asked
"I wanted to- I was trying to-"
"And you're leaving me just a note?"
"I'm sorry, I just wanted justice for Joel"
"We all wanted it" Then she added
"I'm sorry about Joel, but don't leave me like this anymore okay?"
I saw Tommy cry for the first time, then Maria turned to me
"Phil, do you need anything?"
"No thanks, it's just that Ellie told me not to come home because she had to do something, but if you want I'll give you some space" I said and left the house
My arm still hurt a little, but slowly the pain was passing
"It's been a few hours, maybe Ellie will be done" I said under my breath and headed toward Ellie's house
I arrived at the door and knocked
"Ellie?"
"Don't come in yet, I'll let you know" She replied
So I leaned against the wall and waited. After about fifteen minutes Ellie opened the door and looked out, not letting me see inside
"Okay, you're acting weird, what's going on?" I asked
"Well, because... Close your eyes"
"What?"
"Close your eyes"
"All right" I closed my eyes and let her guide me in
Once inside she closed the door
"Good, now open them"
I opened my eyes and saw a ribbon that said 'Happy Birthday!'
I then saw that she had made a portrait of Joel and me, and she even had time to bake a cake!
I was speechless
"Ellie, did you do all of this?" I asked excitedly
"Yes, do you like it?" She asked
"Do I like it? I love it!" I said and then added
"I had even forgotten it was my birthday!"
She laughed and said
"What would you do without me"
I turned to her and hugged her
"Well, first of all, I would have forgotten my birthday"
After that, she kissed me. We pulled away after a few minutes
"Well, how about cutting that cake?" She said
"Okay" I said and we went into the kitchen
I blew out the candles, cut two slices and gave one to Ellie
"Thank you honey" I said handing her the plate with her slice of cake
After eating it, she asked me
"So? How was it?"
"Fucking delicious, you're good at cooking!"
She laughed and then said
"Well, you're 23 now, old man!"
"You're going to be 20 soon too, so you're going to get old too!"
"Let's grow old together then" She put her arms around my neck
"I'd like that" I replied and we kissed again
After a while we drifted apart and she picked up her guitar sitting in bed next to me
"You know, I noticed that I hurt your feelings at the music store, singing your song to Dina and all the various crap that happened"
"Yes, but it doesn't matter, it wasn't your fault" I replied
"Well, I want you to forgive me for that, so I've prepared a song for you"
"Well, let's hear it" I said enthusiastically, and she began to sing
"Closer upon your lips, lying to me
Saying I'm with you wherever you'll be
A jump cut to the bed we used to share
Before you had the baby and I cut off my hair

As she finished singing, I began to cry, and Ellie noticed
"I'm sorry" She said
"Thank you Ellie, this song is beautiful"
"I'm glad you like it"
She smiled and wiped the tears from my cheeks
"I want you to be happy" She said and then added
"I want us to be happy"
I nodded and we kissed again
