"Oh my dearest princess!" Kaveh said, dramatically waving an arm in the air. "Fret not, for I have come to rescue you!"
"Pfft," Alhaitham laughed, watching him from the comfort of his arm chair. He'd been rehearsing for the last hour nonstop because the play was the following day. "You'd probably just bump into the princess and knock her off a cliff," he said.
"Could you stop interrupting me? I'm going to forget this whole script thanks to you. Just for ten minutes!" Kaveh said. He crumpled the paper in his hand and tossed it behind him, collapsing on the chair across from him.
"What's wrong? Gave up already?"Alhaitham asked.
"My head hurts..." Kaveh said, rubbing his forehead with the tip of his fingers. "Haitham, would you be so kind as to make me a cup of tea?"
"Make it yourself. I'm not your maid."
Kaveh leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. His head was pounding harshly, even the light coming from the window was too much. He accidentally fell asleep but managed to not fall off the chair. Sleeping while sitting was something he'd grown accustomed too after all the work and passion projects he went through.
He flinched and jerked up when he felt something tapping his shoulder. "Hm?" He shifted in his chair, looking around him I'm confusion.
"Relax," Alhaitham said, placing a cup of tea at the table next to the vase.
Kaveh glanced up at him in surprise. He let a sly smile escape him.
"Don't misunderstand. If something happens to you, everyone is going to blame me. I can't deal with that," he quickly said.
"Thank you~" Kaveh said sweetly. He took a soft sip off his hot tea and let the steam warm his face. "Thank you...I said tha–"
"Yes, you're welcome," Alhaitham said, raising his eyes at the ceiling in annoyance.
"Huh..." Kaveh said. He held his cup up, examining its contents. "You actually might be good at something."
"It's just tea but okay," Alhaitham said, "anyways, shouldn't you be going to sleep? You have to go tomorrow, remember?"
Kaveh made a whining noise in his cup as he took another sip. "Oh, sleep I dread it. My back is going to break if I sleep another night on your rusty couch."
"You're not taking the bed, don't even try."
"Surely you can't be that selfish?" Kaveh said, raising a brow.
"You'd be surprised," Alhaitham said. He peered out the window, remembering all the things he'd done and tried to do to get Cyno back for himself. Selfish was not enough to describe his actions and he knew that well.
"What is it, dreamy boy?" Kaveh asked, noticing how he dazed off.
"Nothing. Just take the bed," he said and went to sleep on the couch. Maybe he couldn't change the past but the future was in his hands and he had to break the pattern.
"Hey now, I didn't say you have to sleep there...we could both share," Kaveh said. "Hello? Stop pretending to be asleep, I know you're awake."
"Of course I'll be awake if you keep nagging like that. Just go to bed already."
Next morning...
Alhaitham's back ached all night. When he awoke, he pursed his lips upon seeing Kaveh, who was still asleep in his chair. "Psst, get up. You're going to be late," he said, aggressively drilling two fingers into Kaveh's arm.
Kaveh jumped then humped over, holding his shoulder in pain.
"Quit being a baby and let's go," Alhaitham said.
"Wait, you're coming too?"
"To watch you fail, yes."
They paused the back and forth, got ready and headed down to the Bazaar. It was even more crowded than last time. Kaveh wore his best outfit as requested by the director and tied some of his hair back in a fancy way. Alhaitham walked behind him. He admired Kaveh but had to admit that the clothing was a bit much.
"Kaveh, you're here!" The director said. "We have an issue."
"What is it?" Kaveh asked.
"The princess called out. She's sick and won't be performing today," he said in an obviously upset tone.
"Oh...are we going to cancel the show then?"
"No, no, no, no. Can't do that. I barely was able to book the stage for today. The queue would be months away if I were to reschedule," he said and looked around him. "You!" He shouted pointing at Alhaitham.
"Me?" Alhaitham said.
"Get your butt over here," he demanded.
Alhaitham hesitated but approached them.
"You're going to be the prince and Kaveh, you're now the princess."
"What?!" They both yelled.
"He doesn't even know the script," Kaveh said.
"Improvise!!" The director said and shoved them both to the center of the stage. "You have five minutes to get ready before the curtains open."
They both glared at each other in disbelief of the situation they were put in.
"And wear this!" The director shouted, throwing an emerald dress in Kaveh's face.
Kaveh turned red. Did he actually have to do this?
"Bhahah–" Alhaitham lost his mind when he saw him.
"Don't laugh," Kaveh said.
"N-no," Alhaitham wiped a tear from his eye. "You look very beautiful...my princess!" He slapped his knee, howling another laugh.
"Do you always laugh like a donkey? Ugh, you're going to make a mockery out of us..." Kaveh whined.
The director signaled at them and they took their places on either side of the stage. They exchanged looks as the curtains rolled open, revealing an excited and curious audience. Alhaitham winked at Kaveh and he, in turn, responded by sticking out his tongue.
"Once upon a time..." The narrator began.
