Winter break went by in a flash and the start of school was looming.

Both Yi Ran and Song Yu Meng hadn't finished the homework assigned for winter break, only concerned with playing and talking to each other. Who would remember homework?

After some discussion, they registered to head to the library to finish the homework.

There were answers for each of the subjects, and the two of them copied in shifts, when you were tired of copying, I'd take over. Finally, after a long day, they finished all of the work.

But Song Yu Meng had helped Yi Ran copy an additional bit of English, she remembered it clearly. Such a long passage had been a pain to copy.

She couldn't let it go so easily!

"Hey, Crazy Yi, this lady helped you copy an extra five pages of English homework." She said as she packed away the stuff on the table.

Yi Ran smiled. "Then I'll thank you, okay?"

"No. "Song Yu Meng refused to accept that. "You want to get rid of me with just a word of thanks? You think too highly of yourself, don't you?"

"Then what do you want, Miss Song?" She smiled even wider.

Song Yu Meng thought for a while but couldn't come up with an answer. "This lady can't think of something right now, but you owe me a favor. You'll have to return it in the future, you can't deny it!"

Yi Ran laughed. "Am I that sort of unreliable person?"

Song Yu Meng rebutted in a sing-songy manner: "That's hard to say."

......

When school reopened, Tang Xiang Ping called both of them to her office.

The two of them stood side by side, with an uneasy look on their faces. Had they done something wrong, so they were being invited for tea again?

Tang Xiang Ping noted their looks. "Don't be so anxious, I didn't call you two here to scold you."

After hearing that, the two of them relaxed, and wondered what their form teacher was about to say.
"I asked you guys to come here because I wanted to ask for your opinion. This school term, I want to arrange for you guys to sit together. One of you is good in humanities, while the other is good in science and math. You'll be able to help each other out if you sit together." "She pushed up her spectacles and continued. "So, what do you two think?"

Song Yu Meng and Yi Ran looked at each other with warm and gentle gazes, and Song Yu Meng lowered her head. Tang Xiang Ping couldn't see her smiling, but Yi Ran could.

"I'm fine with that." Yi Ran smiled. She couldn't wait to sit with Song Yu Meng.

"Then what about you, Song Yu Meng, any objections?" Tang Xiang Ping asked her.

Song Yu Meng kept her head down and shook her head, feeling happy inside.

On the first day of school, the two of them were seated together at the last row. Originally, it was Song Yu Meng sitting by the door while Yi Ran sat by the window. Now, Song Yu Meng's desk was being moved over by Yi Ran.

After moving the desk over, Yi Ran leaned on it and panted. "So tiring."
Song Yu Meng teased with a smile: "That's all it takes? You're so useless, Crazy Yi."

Yi Ran ignored her teasing and stuck her hand out, smiling. "Hello, new deskmate. Please take care of me."

Song Yu Meng swatted her hand away and said cheekily: "Stop saying this stupid stuff! Silly!"

......

The days went by, and although they would still quarrel, they got along much better than before.

One day, after Chinese class ended, Yi Ran said happily to Song Yu Meng. "It's art class next. An art class without snacks is meaningless. My treat, shall we go?"

"Go!" Song Yu Meng immediately agreed. "You're the one paying, why would I not go!"

Yi Ran held her card in one hand and held Song Yu Meng's hand in the other, running out of the classroom. But when they were passing by the dorm, two gossipy girls saw them walking together, laughing and chatting, and started gossiping.

"Why is Yi Ran walking with that vicious woman, didn't they not get along?"

"Cheh, who knows? Birds of a feather flock together. Anybody who associates with Song Yu Meng can't be anything good. That Yi Ran is probably also not anything good."
But they were unlucky enough to have Song Yu Meng overhear them.

Her temper flared up and she turned 180 degrees around and stormed back towards them, a frightening look on her face.

"Eh?" Yi Ran was just joking with her and didn't realize people were talking behind her back, nor did she understand what was going on with Song Yu Meng. She just thought that she was suddenly very fierce.

The two girls wanted to run, but it was too late, Song Yu Meng was standing in front of them.

"How useless are you that you have to sneak around and talk behind other people's backs? If you're so good, say it to this lady's face!" She stared at them angrily.

Many students were secretly observing, and Yi Ran understood why Song Yu Meng's attitude had changed so drastically; it was because of her.

The two girls trembled and said nothing, eventually turning and fleeing under the gaze of the crowd.

"Cheh, cowards!" Song Yu Meng scolded.

With the two girls gone, the crowd dispersed.

Yi Ran walked over and pulled on her hand, leading her towards the commissary. "Don't be mad. See, I'm not even angry."
"But they scolded you, and you're not even angry?" Song Yu Meng flung her hand away.

Yi Ran smiled blandly. "It's their mouths, how can I stop them from saying what they want? Even if I'm angry, can I hit them in front of so many people? What? Do you want to break the rules and get expelled from school?"

"You were the one who fought with someone else because of me in the past." Song Yu Meng mumbled.

Yi Ran stayed silent, because she didn't know either why she took the risk of expulsion and fought with that hooligan.

Song Yu Meng said righteously: "Even if you're not angry, I'm angry! Then why can't I help you scold them back? It's my mouth, why are you controlling me?"

Yi Ran laughed. "No, they're scolding me, why are you angry?"

"Who's angry?! I just didn't like the two girls, okay? It has nothing to do with you!"

She originally wasn't angry, but after hearing Yi Ran's words, she really flared up without any reason.

"What didn't you like? That they were scolding me?"
"Can't I? So be it if I scold you, but who are they to you? What right do they have to scold you?" Song Yu Meng said.

Yi Ran suddenly bent over slightly and stared at her. "Then who are you to me, to scold me whenever you want?"

Song Yu Meng took a step back, flustered. "I'm your enemy! Can't I scold you? You scold me often too."

Yi Ran looked at her silently, a smile spreading across her face. She was indeed the big miss of the Song family, completely unreasonable!

- Commissary -

Song Yu Meng was still upset, and she chose the most expensive bottle of water, can of chips and snatched Yi Ran's card to pay. At the last minute, she also bought two orange-flavored lollipops. She threw all the snacks to Yi Ran to carry, and then handed the lollipops to Yi Ran.

"This lady is treating you to a sweet."

Yi Ran wanted to laugh in anger. It was clearly her own money, but Song Yu Meng still dared to say she was treating Yi Ran to a sweet.

But.....

"How did you know I like orange-flavored stuff?"
Song Yu Meng pulled on her hair nervously and acted like she wasn't bothered. "How would I know you like orange-flavored stuff. I just bought it randomly, don't think too much."

"Oh, is that so....." Yi Ran smiled mysteriously. "If you say so."

During art class, the teacher put on an art video as per usual.

Yi Ran was sucking on her lollipop while watching and after Song Yu Meng saw it, she munched on a potato chip and asked doubtfully: "Is it really good? You seem to have one with you every day."

Yi Ran looked at her. "Wouldn't you know if you tried it?"

Song Yu Meng shook her head. "I don't want to; it's going to be too cloying."

"You've never even tried it; how would you know if it's cloying or not?" Yi Ran tore the wrapper off the other stick and handed it to Song Yu Meng. "Try it?"

Song Yu Meng sucked on it for a while. It wasn't too bad, the orange flavor was refreshing and not as cloying as she expected.

Yi Ran asked: "How is it? Good?"

Song Yu Meng answered casually: "It's okay, not as nice as you make it out to be."
Yi Ran smiled and crunched up the lollipop in her mouth. While the art teacher wasn't looking, she threw the stick into the rubbish bin accurately.

But the patrolling dean saw it. Worse, he also saw Song Yu Meng eating the lollipop.

Such bad luck!

Both of them were dragged to the teacher's office and educated for half an hour. Said nicely, it's called being educated. Truth is, they were just scolded harshly.

After they came out, both of them tried to push the blame to each other.

Song Yu Meng's blood pressure was through the roof. "It's all your fault, what nonsense was that about art class needing snacks! Now great, Qian Xing Gui caught us!"

Yi Ran rebutted unhappily: "Oh please, you were just unlucky Qian Xing Gui caught you. How could you blame it on me? Am I wrong to treat you to food?"

"You! This lady isn't going to argue with you! I'm cutting ties with you!"

Song Yu Meng angrily left Yi Ran behind, running back up to class.

Yi Ran stood there dumbly. "Cutting ties? When have we ever had ties? Childish."
Song Yu Meng pulled her table away from Yi Ran's when she got back, refusing to even make eye contact.

She did all these not because she really wanted to cut ties with Yi Ran, but to hint to her that she was really unhappy and that she wanted to be coaxed.

But Yi Ran didn't know that, and thought Song Yu Meng really didn't want to speak to her, so she stayed silent too.

Both of them were thinking the same thing: They wouldn't apologize, but if the other person came to coax them, then they'd let it go.

Since both of them had the same idea, so... the cold war lasted till the afternoon with not a single word spoken.

The cold war continued.

After class, Song Yu Meng picked up her bag and left the class, only staying for a moment to give a warning look to Yi Ran. If she didn't come to coax Song Yu Meng, there wouldn't be a chance!

But Yi Ran was detained because she hadn't finished yesterday's English homework, so she couldn't coax Song Yu Meng or go home.
Song Yu Meng didn't have anything else she could do. She wanted to stay back to wait for her to go home together, but she couldn't find a suitable excuse. If things were normal, she could just brush it off, but they were still in the middle of a cold war.

She could only leave in a bad mood. Sitting in her car, she was absent-mindedly staring out the window the whole way, as if hoping for something to show up

With a gloomy look on her face, even Uncle Wang could tell she was unhappy.

It was cold out, but the car had warm air blowing, so the windows fogged up and blocked Song Yu Meng's view of the outside.

Looking at the condensation, she raised a hand and wrote on the glass, stroke by stroke, until "Yi Ran" appeared.

Glancing at the name she wrote, Song Yu Meng's eyes were swimming with emotion.

Just as the condensation was about to cover the words, she used her finger to write "Song Yu Meng" under them.

At this moment, longing filled her whole heart.

She really missed Yi Ran.
