Kaian

It was a good evening, no doubt, with the sun gone and the sound of rain audible enough through my living room windows to keep me calm. It was the kind of night that I didn't want wasted on an argument.

With luck by my side merely never, I wasn't surprised the opposite was happening.

Amir, my life long best friend and his two daughters were currently here. And it wasn't their company that disrupted my peace, no I was fine with them being here, it was just the topic of our current conversation.

"I don't care what you're trying to tell me, the most that man can be is half as good as you," I told Amir, setting down another rejected job application file and taking a sip of whatever drink he prepared for me.

"That's what I'm trying to explain, Kaian, nobody can be as good as me, but half will have to do. You need someone by your side, who else is going to control your fucking temper?" He commented, taking a swig out of the bottle itself.

"I can control my temper just fine, what I need is someone to have my back when I'm not fucking looking." I argued. "Not everyone can do that, especially now, so hurry up and get better already,"

He sighed, shutting his eyes briefly and I couldn't help but look at his casted ankle and the other bandaged leg, both of which had children's drawings and stickers all over them. The culprits, his two daughters, were currently stuffing their faces with ice cream beside him, one vomit green and the other medicine pink.

It wasn't my job to worry about children's messes but the chairs they were sitting on were looking a little too clean for kids to be eating ice cream on.

"Uncle Kaian pepper, you're not allowed to say bad words!" The younger one exclaimed, her teeth the color of her ice cream.

"You gotta give us money for the swear jar,"

"Gotta watch your mouth around here, Kai," he shook his head as if he didn't swear with every breath he fucking took.

I sighed and took my wallet out of my pocket and gave the both of them fifty bucks.

     "That enough?"

"It gets higher every time you swear, you gotta promise you won't, uncle Kaian,"

Amir let out a laugh, pretty fucking prowd of his kids for knowing just what to say and I couldn't help but laugh too.

     "I won't swear anymore, promise." I said.

They went on their merry ways to their damned swear jar on the counter table, which was nearly full.

"As I was saying, there's nobody, not one person I felt comfortable working with. Either they're good and I can't trust them or I can trust them but they're not good. I can't find anybody who's both."

"So what are you gonna do? Not do any mission until this fucking cast comes off?" he asked, forgetting about the no swearing rule and pointing at his cast. I heard his daughters gasp. "Do you realize what's at stake here? Don't be a fucking idiot, Kaian, if you can't find someone to go by your side then you continue doing shit by yourself,"

"You owe money to the girls,"

    "Fucking shit," he muttered.

"What are you two fighting about this time?" Eliana asked, walking into the living room with a few shopping bags.
