I heard that you've been
Having some trouble finding your place in the world
I know how much that hurts
But if you need a friend
Then please just say the word

============================
I sit awkwardly at the dinner table, facing my now-mom-and-dad. I made tea for all three of us. I take a sip, looking anywhere but the two foreign people in front of me. Should I have even invited them in? I barely know my own parents. Now that's a story to tell.
When I place the cup onto the table, my fingers tap on the side, making a clicking noise.
When is Luke coming home?
"So, how has school been?" My mom asks. I look at them. Their eyes glow happily. It makes me feel weird. I've never had parents before. Is this usual?
"Um, it's been good. I have only a few friends and I have a-"
The door opens, and my eyes widen.
"Uh- Um, I'll be, um, right back." I laugh nervously, but it sounds more like forced are coming out of my throat. I rush to the door.
Luke stands with bags in his hands, placing then down. Since the door is still open, I press my hands on his chest and push him backward.
"What the-"
I shut the door and face him.
"What the fuck? What's wrong."
I breathe. I don't even know what's going on. "Long story short, I'm an orphan and I've never had parents, and right now my mom and dad are sitting at my table and I made tea and it's so weird because I've never had fucking parents and I'm so fucking confused and-"
"Shhhhh." He pulls me into a hug, and I wrap my arms around his back. "It's okay. I get that you're confused. It's okay to be confused." He runs his hand through my hair. I close my eyes. "Why don't we go in together okay?"
I nod and wipe the tears that have slowly fallen out of my eyes.
"Okay."
As we walk back in, the groceries that are on the floor in plastic bags have spilled out of the bag. I leave all of it where it is for now, paying attention to the problem in front of me.
"As I was saying, I had a couple of friends and-" I take Luke's hand as we come into view. "-a boyfriend."
My mother and father's smiles drop when they see Luke. He doesn't seem to care though. He reaches his hand out and says, "Glad I finally get to meet you." They shake hands, but don't say anything. That's when the silence follows.
We don't say anything. My hand starts to get sweaty, so I grip tighter. He seems to notice.
"Well, I'm going to go take care of the food." He turns to me and places a kiss on my head. I smile. It fills me with strength. I walk over and sit with my parents. Once I know Luke is out of ear shot, I start talking about him to them.
"He's really sweet, and he's also in a band. I lo-"
"I don't like him." My mother says at once. "I want him gone."
Wow. Wasn't expecting that.
"Um, excuse me?" I blink. Did I just hear that correctly? Gone? My only happiness?
