DEXTER MORGAN IS COMPLETELY, UNEQUIVOCALLY NORMAL. He wakes up, puts his shoes on one at a time, and drives his 1995 Ford F-150 to Quantico, where he works in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Full disclosure, though - when Dexter isn't assisting with doing forensics analysis and solving crimes...he's committing them, himself, on the side.
However, Dexter only murders those who are murderers themselves...so it's valid, right? Moving up to the BAU from his previous position at a local police station surely makes keeping his extracurricular activities under wraps, but what's life without a little risk?

NOTES:
• this is based off of the dexter book/tv series (which is available to stream on multiple different platforms if u're interested! if u enjoy criminal minds it's right up ur alley)
• i have this planned out as a fic w/o a love interest in an alternate universe/a non-specific timeline, but feel free to change this to ur discretion. if u have a certain someone in mind u'd like to pose as a love interest, go for it. if u do go down that route, please be mindful that dexter doesn't experience emotions normally. i don't think he's ever given a specific diagnosis/diagnoses, but he exhibits traits of: antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy, psychopathiy, and obsessive compulsive disorder so please be sensitive w/ those topics
• as for the timeline, if u have a specific timeline in mind that u'd like to use, then once again, go for it. i didn't make this plot w/ any cases in mind, so if u want to follow a season or pick and choose cases from multiple seasons, do so
• basically, dexter is a serial killer, but his victims are all murderers themselves. the irony is that he's also a blood splatter analyst and frequently works w/ the police. for criminal minds purposes, what his specific job is up to u. i'm leaning towards him being a forensic psychologist like tara, but maybe u can include him having previously been a blood splatter analysis/forensic scientist in his past
• dexter uses his available resources to his advantage (see: the bau database). he uses this info to track down his victims and carry out his crimes. he's also very meticulous about his murders, so he doesn't get caught
• as he works at the bau, he's also committing his own murders. in the original series, he's nicknamed as "the bay harbor butcher" but since criminal minds doesn't take place in bay harbor, u can either just go w/ "the butcher" or something else. i'm sure there's already a serial killer nicknamed "the butcher" in criminal minds since it's not too unique of a nickname, but u could either act like the og one doesn't exist or have someone make a joke about the unoriginality of the nickname
• i recommend either watching some of the show and/or reading thru the dexter wiki for more info on how he conducts his killings. i don't have much else planned for this plot other than, as they're investigating dexter's murders, the bau is stumped and frustrated that they can't find out the butcher's true identity
• when i was going to write this plot originally, i was planning on ending the story w/ dexter finally being arrested. i also originally planned this to be a spencer fic, and spencer being the one who eventually figures it out and calls in dexter's arrest. spencer takes it especially hard, not only b/c of his and dexter's relationship, but also b/c he's often heralded as the smartest one of the group and even he couldn't figure it out for the longest time. however, u could go down this route w/ basically anyone in the bau
