"Tango? Whatcha doing in there?"

Tango was curled up in a corner of the cow inclosure, in a kind of makeshift nest in the hay.

"Tango? You okay?"

Tango said nothing, only fed a strand of straw to the braying creature. Impulse made his way into the pen and crouched down beside the blonde.

"What's up, bud?"

Tango picked at the ground. "S'just... Nice smell."

Impulse raised an eyebrow. "No, no it's not."

"Well, no... It just... Brings back nice memories."

The brunette's eyes softened. "Come on, why don't you come out here, Tango?"

The netherborne reluctantly stood up and followed the taller out of the inclosure, running a hand down the cow's soft coat as he went.

Once Impulse had shut the gate behind them, Tango leant against one of the stone walls and sunk to the floor.

Skizz and Etho were disturbed from their conversation in another room by Impulse gesturing with his head for them to come and sit with the blonde who had his head in his arms.

"I just miss him."

"Hey, we get it. I still miss my mad little pirate." Etho's eyes twinkled as he spoke.

"And I feel weird seeing Bdubs running around with Scar and Cleo. It's perfectly normal, after how close we were, all of us."

"I don't..." Tango lifted his head up just enough to be able to stare at the floor in front of him. "I don't miss him any more; he's a complete jerky jerkface, now. But I miss the way things used to be."

He lifted his hand and stared at the part of his little finger where the red string of fate had once tied him to the one he loved.

"I guess I felt like because the game had put us together, there was no way we could fall apart. Of course, I loved him because of more than that. But I still..."

He trailed off, staring at the ground again, burying his head in his knees again.

"I don't wanna be all alone."

"But you're not all alone," Skizz reasoned. "You've got us."

Tango said nothing.

Something clicked inside of Impulse. "You're worried you're going to get betrayed again, aren't you? Scared you'll be backstabbed or abandoned?"

Tango said nothing.

"Oh, Tango..."

The brunette spread his arms in an invite of a hug, and Tango immediately accepted.

He clung to Impulse like his life depended on it (and Impulse realised that in Tango's head he probably thought it did), and the taller felt a pang of sadness looking at the shaking figure in his arms; wondering how such a warm and happy soul could be ruined by such cruelty found in the very depths of one's heart.

He tried to hug back as hard as he could without suffocating the shorter.

He pulled away and Tango was instantly tackled with a hug by Skizz, at which the blonde gave a watery laugh before hugging back.

And after he pulled away, a very rare thing happened, for Etho, too (albeit after a moment of hesitation), spread his arms in an invitation.

Tango was just as surprised as you or me, and he of course welcomed the invitation happily. The hug was a somewhat cold one (you can blame Etho's everlasting below-zero temperature for that one), but Tango really didn't care.

He knew how lucky he was to be experiencing this.

Skizz joined the hug, and so did Impulse, and Tango's tail began to swish.

Maybe this life was worth living after all.
