the engagement

and there it is
the words you'd been waiting on
from the moment things went to hell
it was the last thing you'd ever wanted to see
proof that he won
this was it, he'd won
an unspoken battle
for the past three years
and by the smile on his face
he thinks he won.
so you breathe in.
breathe out.
drink a smoothie for breakfast.
say yes to the new job.
leave the hometown behind
and drive across the country.
it's a new beginning.
he can't have won.
the game was only beginning.
