"And what's wrong with that? Damon is my friend, and someone I actually care about and know! I don't know who you are, just leave me alone!" (y/n) stated. It appeared that (y/n)'s words did get to the stranger for a moment, though the stranger continued to smile as if it was nothing.

"How it pains me that you still care about him. I'm so much better, though then again... I wasn't even aware you wouldn't even know who I was. Given how our moms were friends, after all~ Well, allow me to introduce myself, and to your... Friend. Actually, since we're all mages, I'll have my familiar do it for me." the male said, finally giving in and letting (y/n) know who he truly was.

From behind him, out of nowhere really, a splitting image of himself appeared. Though the copy was dressed in different clothes, much more practical, though it appeared less ornate.

"Standing before you is his royal highness, 3rd Prince, Shiraki Yuuma. Though, given his permission, his Highness has permitted his partner to simply address him by his name, Yuuma." the copy spoke, in a dull voice. Stating it straightforwardly, unlike the actual person who kept avoiding answering the question for as long as he could.

"Wait-THAT's your familiar? That's a human, and like a-a copy of you!" (y/n) exclaimed, as far as he knew. Familiars, though intelligent, simply acted as lovable animals or companions. Though there weren't any that could speak, no less mimic a person's appearance and voice.

"Yes, this is my familiar, I am S rank after all, dear~." Yuuma smiled. "Are you disappointed? I know it's no animal, but having a doppelgänger, a shape-shifter if you will, as a familiar is rather practical if you ask me. Having two versions of yourself, or really anyone is extremely handy. Especially when you have one that can copy your abilities, though... not as powerful as the original~".

Your Pov

T-this is absurd! Sure I probably have broken a fair number of common assumptions about magic, but like--how the hell is a doppelgänger a possible familiar? I don't think even recorded ranks have such a unique familiar. Like most would be dragons or something animalistic at least...

...

Did the familiar just say he's a prince?

"My~ it was not I had in mind that you'd be stunned by this information, my dear~".

"H-hold on. Y-you, or your... familiar, said you're a prince, right?" I asked hesitantly, glancing at him unsure. Given his destructive power, he still stood too close for comfort, but I was more worried about Damon and the workers here.

"Who knows?" He said teasingly, smirking a bit as he hummed a light tune. Would I get into legal trouble if I sucker punch a prince?

"Apologies to his royal highness, he can be quite idiotic. In any case, he is Prince Shiraki Yuuma, 3rd in line to the imperial throne. He hails from the Eastern Continent, being one of the few royals who were left unscathed by the Council's ban many centuries ago." the copy spoke in his stead, though the words were a bit flat in how it was spoken. I at least appreciated that his familiar got the point, even if they looked identical to one another. At least some solace could be found somewhere in this chaos.

"I see... Well, thank you for being straightforward with that. Let me ask you this then, not your master who... anyways-what is his history, and what does he want with me?" I asked the familiar who immediately answered, leaving no room for Yuuma to respond. Thank god.

"It might take a while to explain in detail, but in short - His highness' mother, birth mother, was a concubine of the emperor and one who knew your mother long before she entered the imperial harem. From what I am aware of, the two of them were long-distance friends who would often exchange gifts when they visited or wrote letters to each other. The gifts varied in quality and size, yet most of the time it was random trinkets or desserts. Something of note, their last exchange was of two boxes, one painted in black lacquer and another a simple wooden box. This was their last exchange as the two would lose contact with one another for a reason I do not know."
