Chapter Eleven
Bug-tacular!

If anyone ever tells you that plummeting into a fast-flowing river is fun. You should completely believe them! You heard that right–erm, I mean, read that right. The part, however, that is not enjoyable would be seconds before you splash. Luckily for us, though, we weren't entirely falling; Saphire was gliding downwards.
"How are you feeling?"
I cocked my head to the side. "We're falling to our doom, and you're asking me how I am?"
"Ah, so that must mean you're–"
Splash!
"Nnnngt!" I have no clue what he just said, thanks to Saphire hitting the water. Xavier held me tightly from behind as we were consumed by the rushing river.
The impact was not that bad, really. It was the freezing cold water engulfing my body all at once. There was only darkness; all sounds were drowned out by the water. Fuck, where is this river flowing from? An iceberg? That's what it feels like. Instead of drowning, I'll probably end up freezing to death. Thanks to the strong current, my fingers had trouble gripping the saddle handle beneath them. If it were not for Xavier's arm around me, I'd likely end up—
Something scaley hit my cheek.
What the heck was that?
It felt like a fish.
Did I just get slapped by a fish?
Before that question could get an answer, Saphire resurfaced. I coughed the second we were out of the water. A fish wiggled on Saphire's back a few inches from me.
"F–fucking fish!" I spat, coughing up half of Noble River in the meantime. "How dare you slap me! You just wait! I'll fry you up for lunch, you little shit-nibble-wrangler!"
The fish, however, didn't answer back. It just eyed me, mouth opening as it gasped in the air.
"Ha! That's what you get! You scaley bastard!"
I felt someone shift behind me. "Are you all right, Milady? Or did the water wash some brain cells away?"
What did he just say?
Glancing over my shoulder, I would've likely slapped him if it were not for the mage standing on the same cliff we were just on. The hooded man held one hand above his head. He was chanting words I could not hear due to the rushing water. Streams of deep purple began to swirl above him, and they began to form a very dangerous, shadowy-looking arrow.
Oh, it was pointing in our direction.
Yay us!
"What the fuck is that?" Someone spoke above the roar of the river.
Wait, that was me.
"Ava! Protection now!" Xavier commanded from behind me. "Shield us!" His hold on me never faltered. If anything, it tightened. "Don't worry, my love," I felt the warmth of this breath hit my damp neck. "We will be fine."
"Call me that again, and I cannot guarantee your safety!" I hissed. "I am not your love!"
"But you could be," a sudden movement from his arm drew me flush against his front. For a moment, I thought about his words. Was he suggesting that...He and I...? "You could be mine, mine to protect, mine to love, mine to make sweet passionate—Ahhh!" And my elbow rammed into his ribcage.
