Whoever named this the oasis desert, I severely wanted to slaughter. Even though the noble river flowed beneath us, there was not a single drop of water anywhere. I guess that is why it's called a desert.
We had been wandering through this place for two days as if I had been in a nightmare.
Kaylin scouted ahead for food or water while Ava changed my badges. She was currently inspecting Xavier's injuries, which were surprisingly mostly healed.
"I don't get it," I said with a sigh of defeat. "How has Xavier healed already?" One of my hands brushed over my injured side, causing me to hiss at the pain.
"It's better to ask him that question."
I squealed upon hearing Kaylin's voice. "What the fuck, Kaylin? Quit sneaking up on me!"
She laughed, placing a hand on my shoulder. "I'm an Elf, princess. Sneaking is my speciality." I watched Kaylin sit on a rock beside me. Her lips formed a straight line. "I couldn't find anything."
During our time in this God-forsaken desert, Kaylin had explained magic to me. According to the elves, all magic users had a primal element they could draw upon.
Kaylin's element is fire; anything that generates heat, such as the sun, even our bodies, is a source for her. Being a healer, Ava's element is water. She can draw upon droplets in the air. For me, however, we don't know what my element is. And Xavier? Well, apparently, he cannot use magic.
I found that fucking confusing. How can Xavier be the captain of Oblivion when he cannot even use magic? It did not make any sense to me. So far, I know that Xavier can recover from injuries quicker than I can. Not to mention, he is more powerful than any man or knight I have ever met. Even more than my father.
Ah, yes, my father.
Anger rose inside of me when I thought about my so-called father. Part of me did not want to find him, but the other half worried if he were still alive.
"Your father should be in Mentra by now. So, don't worry," Kaylin said, causing me to wonder if she was a mind reader. "You make that hideous face whenever you're thinking of him." She laughed.
"Screw you!" I slapped her hand off my shoulder.
"Yes, please!" Xavier approached us with a smirk plastered across those lips. "I'll gladly take you up on that offer."
I secretly admitted to myself that I did find Xavier somewhat attractive. But he still irritated me. "In your dreams, maybe."
Reaching me, Xavier brushed his fingers through his hair. "In my dreams, we wear less clothing," he winked, reaching out as he touched my cheek.
My skin instantly felt like someone had lit it on fire beneath his touch. I brushed his hand away. "How far are we from Mentra?"
"It's about a three-day journey, but Milady, you shouldn't go there." His green eyes locked with mine. I could tell he was hiding something from me. "That city is no place for the royal family."
"Well, my father's there, isn't he? So why—"
"If the King is indeed in Mentra, then he would be dead by now," Xavier told me.
Dead?
"Xavier, what the fuck is that supposed to mean?"
Ava cleared her throat. "Mentra hates your family. The great Castle of Zothera is the only thing preventing them from ruling all of Zothia."
