Chapter 9
“Dr. Kim, Dr. Han is waiting for you in the conference room,” Nurse Nancy said, catching Jennie off guard.
“Soo Hee?” Jennie raised an eyebrow, surprised.
“Yes, I think she has a solution already,” Nancy replied.
"Uhmm, that was fast. Can you just meet her in my office instead?" Jennie asked, trying to buy a bit more time.
“Sure, Dr. Kim,” Nancy smiled before leaving.
---
Jennie and Soo Hee sat across from each other in Jennie's office. Jennie gave Soo Hee a nod of approval.
“You’re really good at this, Dr. Han. It's great that you detected the issue early,” Jennie said with a smile.
"Luckily, I checked the scan and noticed the tumor's location. We need to perform a craniotomy. We’ll remove part of the skull bone to expose the brain," Soo Hee explained with professionalism. "This procedure can also help with removing blood clots, alleviating brain pressure, or treating other conditions like aneurysms."
“So we’ll need to remove a bone flap?” Jennie confirmed.
“Yes. The flap is temporarily removed and replaced after the surgery. We’ll schedule it after I assess the patient,” Soo Hee said, looking at the patient’s file.
“Alright, we’ll see the patient then,” Jennie replied, nodding.
A knock interrupted their conversation.
“Do you have visi—” Jennie started, but the door opened before she could finish her sentence.
“Your coffee, Ms. Kim,” Lisa entered, walking directly toward Jennie without noticing Soo Hee. “Here you go.”
Jennie smiled, surprised to see Lisa. “Uhm, hey honey. What brings you here?” she asked, approaching Lisa and giving her a quick kiss on the cheek.
Lisa froze, stunned by the kiss and the sight of Soo Hee. "Yo… your coffee," she muttered, her eyes locking on Soo Hee, who quickly looked away. “Sorry, I should…”
“No, honey, I was just surprised you came to visit me,” Jennie said, clinging to Lisa. “We were just discussing our patient who needs surgery. Thank you for the coffee, honey. You’re so sweet,” she added with another kiss on Lisa’s cheek.
Lisa gulped, her attention now fully on Soo Hee. “I was just passing by and thought you might need a coffee to energize,” Lisa stammered, then glanced at Soo Hee. Jennie noticed the tension in the room.
“Oh, sorry Dr. Han, you’ve met my girlfriend, Lisa, right?” Jennie said, still holding onto Lisa.
Soo Hee looked at Jennie and Lisa, a quiet pain flickering in her eyes. "Ye…ah," she murmured, forcing a smile and shaking Lisa’s hand. “It’s good to meet you again.”
Lisa smiled nervously. “Nice to meet you again, Dr. Han.”
Jennie was still holding onto Lisa’s arm, her gaze shifting between the two. "Uh, guys?" she said, trying to break the silence.
“Oh, sorry,” Lisa muttered, noticing how intently Soo Hee was looking at her. “You were talking about something important, weren’t you?”
Soo Hee finally spoke, her voice trembling. “Your perfume. It reminds me of someone very dear to me.”
Jennie frowned at the mention of the perfume. “Really? Well, I told Lisa not to use that anymore, actually. I don’t like the smell.”
Lisa, looking uncomfortable, nodded. "Someone gave it to me as a gift... it reminds me of her," she said, glancing at Soo Hee.
“That someone must be really special,” Soo Hee said, her voice soft, betraying a tinge of sadness.
“Well, that was before,” Jennie quickly responded, a little too eagerly. “She has me now. I’ll take care of her.” She leaned her head on Lisa’s shoulder, her jealousy bubbling to the surface.
Lisa, a little caught off guard by Jennie’s possessiveness, smiled awkwardly. "Yeah, you guys look really in love," Soo Hee remarked. "You're lucky to have her, Dr. Kim." She glanced at Lisa and quickly excused herself. "Anyway, I need to see Rose and Jisso. Jen, I’ll see you later. Excuse us," she added before walking out.
Lisa's eyes lingered on Soo Hee as she left the room, and Jennie immediately noticed.
“Hey, lieutenant, do you know each other well?” Jennie asked, puzzled by Lisa’s reaction.
“Uh, here’s your coffee, Ms. Kim. I just need to... I’ll be right back,” Lisa said hurriedly, rushing out of the room before Jennie could say another word.
“Hmm?” Jennie furrowed her brows, confused. She followed Lisa to the hallway, watching as Lisa disappeared into the elevator. Something was off, and Jennie couldn’t shake the feeling that she was missing something.
---
Meanwhile, Lisa spotted Soo Hee in the hallway, and her heart pounded. This was her chance to talk to her. She ran toward the elevator where Soo Hee was heading.
“Soo Hee!” Lisa called out, catching up to her.
“Soo Hee…”
---
Jennie, still in the hallway, watched the two of them talk, her curiosity piqued. When the elevator doors closed, Jennie noticed something odd: the way Lisa and Soo Hee seemed to be in their own world, locked in a quiet conversation. Jennie, unable to resist, decided to follow them.
She watched from the corner of the rooftop, hidden from view. Her heart raced as she overheard their conversation.
“Where have you been? I thought you were… dead,” Soo Hee's voice trembled as tears filled her eyes.
Dead? Jennie’s heart skipped a beat. So, Lisa and Soo Hee had some deep history that she wasn’t aware of.
“What? Me? Dead?” Lisa’s voice was filled with confusion.
“Yes, your commander told me your name tag was all he had left. He said there were no survivors from the ambush,” Soo Hee’s voice cracked, and Jennie could hear the pain in her words.
All this time, Soo Hee had been mourning Lisa. Jennie felt a knot form in her stomach as she watched Lisa hold Soo Hee in an embrace.
“I didn’t know what happened after the ambush,” Lisa said, her voice full of regret. “I passed out after seeing my comrades fall. I don’t even remember how I survived.”
“But why didn’t you call me? Why didn’t you come back? I waited for you, Lisa. For so long,” Soo Hee’s voice broke as she pulled Lisa closer.
Lisa's face softened, tears spilling from her eyes. “I’m so sorry. If only I woke up sooner…”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Soo Hee whispered, her fingers brushing Lisa’s face gently. “Maybe... maybe if I had listened to you, we could have had a different future.” Soo Hee tried to smile, though the pain in her eyes was evident.
Jennie’s heart pounded as she stood hidden, eavesdropping. Lisa and Soo Hee’s conversation seemed too intimate, too full of unresolved emotions. What had really happened between them? And who was Lisa really in love with?
Lisa, trying to smile through her tears, looked down at her empty finger. “Are you happy with him?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jennie’s chest tightened at the sound of those words.
