Ocean's Wisdom
Firnis ashed his pipe, tap tap. His chin wrinkled as he glanced past me at the waves rolling in. "Life is like an ocean, son. Calm and blue and crystal clear, wild and rough and murky. Further than the horizon and lapping at your feet, but always the ups and downs, the rhythms of life." He met my eyes. "Music and wonder and terror in all of it, and below the surface a myriad little creatures."
"Are we the creatures then Firnis, dancing to the ocean's song, or can we rise above it?"
He remained silent, puffing, watching the sunset.
