"I won't tell if you don't," Casey whispered into my ear.
A good deal! I nodded my consent and grabbed her hand. We’d failed together, the camaraderie almost felt better than knowing Mom would be disappointed.
If we both kept our mouths shut, Mom would never know. It was a lie I almost convinced myself of. When the bell rang, nervous butterflies churned in my stomach. What if Mom’s uncanny sixth sense kicked in again?
Mom’s heels clacked on pavement, her icy gaze on me. She knew.
I let go of Casey’s hand, looked at my feet, and mumbled, “Sorry.”
