i was sitting on the living room couch reading a comic when i heard a knock on the door.

"mom, someone's at the door!" i yelled out for her, but there was no response. she probably fell asleep or something.

another knock was heard when i was about to get up.

sighing, i replied, "wait!"

my annoyance immediately left as soon as i saw richie tozier on my doorstep.

"richie, what're you doing here? what happened?" i asked after i noticed his red face.

he shook his head, "bill happened. can i come in?" i nodded and opened the door more, "sure. i'll go make us something to drink."

"thanks," was all he said before we went to the kitchen.

i was curious about what happened between richie and bill. i never really knew bill much, let alone his entire friend group.

i wasn't in their group, i was a separate friend.

richie and i became friends last year when we were paired for a biology project. during those few weeks, we clicked. but after, he started to distance himself from me, as if he was isolating himself from me.

i was pretty sad, sure. but then later he approached me again to hang out.

but he did say something about his friend group being insane.

"so, what happened?" i asked as i grabbed a jug from the cabinet.

it took him a moment to say something, "we had a fight."

"about?"

"it's a long story," he sighed and i nodded, "you can tell me if you want."

he nodded back, "sure. but you'll think i'm the one who's insane."

i smiled, "never."

let's just say, i wasn't mentally prepared for this.

i looked at richie with a surprised and weird look.

i thought it was just me.

"look, i know it sounds crazy but-"

"you guys have been seeing it too?" i cut him off.

richie stares at me for a moment, "you- you've been seeing things too? that clown?"

i slowly nodded, "yeah, but i didn't see whatever you guys saw."

"then what was it?"

being a backup friend.

"heights. i fell from a really tall building and was engulfed by darkness before i could hit the ground."

"oh."

there was a moment of silence.

"well, i better get going. thanks for the drink. see you tomorrow."

"tomorrow?"

"yeah, i was thinking of bringing you to this cool spot i've been going to. if you wanna go that is," he shrugged.

i smiled again, "sure, i'd love to go."

he smiled back, "great! see you then."

and that's how it's been for a few weeks.

richie and i would visit each other's houses, visit different spots in town, and go to the quarry or the arcade.

today, we were at the arcade when bill ran in and told him about "it" taking their friend.

and without a single word, he left me.

i hate being the backup friend.

this is also a sneak peek of one of my upcoming books :)
