pre-season.

"weow," tyler squeaked, the familiar bitter aftertaste of alcohol re-hitting him after yet another shot.

when he was younger, he'd accidentally take a sip out of his parent's drinks from time to time. he never understood how people could enjoy the pungent taste.

that was until he got drunk for the first time, and was struck with the feather-like feeling of it. the light drowsiness was never appreciated, but tyler had to admit the intoxicated sense itself was assuring for whatever reason. it made him forget. it was almost calming, knowing you could live in that moment without having to deal with your regrets until morning.

at this point in his life, this state was more of a treat.

but as of lately, it had been more regular. it jumped from once a month to once a week. and then twice a week. and then three times a week... and so on.

tyler got absolutely zonked after every game, woke up late, called sophia, played, then did it all again.

he felt guilty. he usually wouldn't, but it stemmed from the fact soph didn't know. she was aware of how big of a partier he was when she wasn't around, but he never wanted to admit that he was still doing it to ease the void-like feeling from her not being here with him.

the bartender offered him another round. he would've taken it, if it wasn't for sophia facetiming him.

the man scrambled out of his barstool, leaving two twenty dollar bills on the counter as he rushed out of the bar. he was desperate to get as far away from it as possible so she couldn't see he was there.

as he jogged down the street, he pondered what she was even doing up this late. they were three hours ahead, and it was about midnight on the west coast now.

"hello?" tyler asked, once he felt he was in a safe area to pick up.

"hey," the woman greeted with a sigh, "so i didn't wake you?" soph joked, referring to the fact that he was walking outside.

"nope, not at all," he assured, holding his face low in attempt to hide his droopy cheeks and disconnected eyes.

"sorry to call so late. i couldn't sleep. i'm guessing you couldn't either?" she told.

"yeah. i tried, but i woke up hungry so i'm walking to find food now." tyler lied.

sophia looked tired in the dim lighting from her side of the screen. in the distant background, he spied the flowers he got her for valentine's day.

"you got my roses?" he asked with a smile.

"yes! they're gorgeous. it's a shame they showed up so late though," soph giggled. "did you get my chocolates?"
