Chapter 4

Karthik scrolled through his phone listlessly. Naira sat by the coffee table, looking over the accounts of her dance academy.

"Naira?"

"Hmm?"

"Hamne, Akshu ko Kasauli jaane dekar koi galti toh nahi ki na?"

Naira glanced up. Karthik had a far off look in his eye. "Karthik, tumne dekhana aaj, Akshu theek hai."

"Par phir bhi, inn che saalon mein, akele sab kuch...."

"Voh zaroori tha. Akshu ko space ki zaroorat thi."

These were the same words Naira had told him six years ago.

Flashback

"Mein Kasauli jaa raha hoon." Karthik grabbed his coat and car keys, storming out the door.

"Nahi Karthik."

Karthik's foot froze mid air, not crossing the threshold.

"Naira?"

"Mein bhi ek baar ghar chod kar gayi thi. Shayad Akshu ki umar hi hogi. Mein samajhthi hoon ki voh kis haal mein hain. Akshu ko space ki zaroorat hain."

"Lekin Naira, hamari bachi..."

"Strong hain. Sambhal legi. Hamari beti hain." Naira remained strong despite her tears. "Meri beti ne faisla le liya hain. Uski Ma uske saath khadi rahegi."

Akshara hurried placed the sandwiches on the four plates, sitting before hers with a book in hand.

Kaira frowned and looked at Abhinav and Abhir. "Phir se?"

"Kaira, aapki Di na padhai se pareshan hain, isliye, jam ka pahad banakar bethi hain. Ab agle ek hafte tak jam hi milega." Abhinav explained sorrowfully.

Whenever Akshara got tensed or found a particular segment hard to understand she'd be so into the subject she would accidentally end up making more jam than necessary. 

And lately with exams around the corner, this was once every two weeks in the Sharma household.

"Maasi, chup chap kha lo varna Mumma aapka jam bana degi."

Akshara clicked her tongue and shut her books. "Yeh law ki padhai itni difficult kyun hoti hain? Arrey mein to bhul hi gayi, jam banana tha."
