"Maci..."

She turned so quickly, chucking a stone the intruder could only avoid because he was somehow ever faster.

"Lina."

Maci had found a cave on the edge of her city, waiting until the sun set to run. The sky was close to red, a colour she never wanted to see again, but that symbolised her freedom to search. To risk stepping outside. To test her fangs.

To do it without Kol.

"Elijah," Her arms landed on his neck as she let herself sob, "Lijah – "

"Shh, shh," He rubbed her back, "It's all okay."

"He – he – "

"What happened?" He stared into her eyes, "Your fiancé..."

She froze.

Maci wanted to spill.

She wanted to let all the words come out and tell him everything that had happened, but if she did?

"You were able to drink my blood?"

"I, um," She pushed back to wipe her eyes, "I couldn't do it."

He wasn't blinking.

"I couldn't marry him."

She wasn't sure how he'd react if she told Elijah what Kol had done.

She wanted to think he'd reign down hell on his brother, but she also didn't want two brothers arguing – especially over her. The Mikaelsons had eternity stuck with each other; she would not be the reason they grew apart or started fights. She was so sick of fights.

And men.

And blood.

And herself. Her life – her stupid little –

"I left them – I've ruined them."

"Do not talk that way," Elijah was almost whispering, "Lina – "

"Don't – "

"I saw the room."

She swallowed.

"If he attacked you..."

Her brain clicked.

It was all a cover-up.

Kol had picked a cover-up instead of letting her choose to turn.

"I never should've left you," Elijah was tearing up, staring at the dry blood across her dress, "I should have taken you away."

Maci's eyes widened.

"I should've told you that I loved you."

She didn't understand why he looked so in awe.

"You looked so beautiful," His hands cupped her face, "All I wanted to do was ask you not to do it."

Bringing their foreheads together and allowing his lips to smile.

"Lina."

She felt her lungs tense.

"You drank the blood."

He was bringing her lips to his.

"You turned," His kisses were short but passionate across every feature, "I'm so sorry he retaliated - but you – "
