AMAYA

The hours went by, as me and Chase's family stayed in the waiting room. Chase had gone in for a few procedures, to get rid of damaged tissue and stitch up his wounds. The doctors confirmed that the operation would take a few hours, but they didn't specify how many, which is reasonable.

While waiting, me and Victoria talked about what I was doing here.
"Ultimately, I was just tracking my phone, but then I found out what truly happened with you guys, and so I came in and got you guys out." I explained.

"Are you sure? Or was it just for Chase?" Victoria teased, yet I avoided eye contact with her.
"Maybe, maybe not."
She chuckled at my comment, as if she knew the actual truth.

Chase started moving his head, and slowly but surely he opened his eyes, looking in mine. I gave him a moment, instead of speaking immediately. I knew exactly how he felt; hurt and confused.

"Where am I?" he asked.
"The hospital." I said.
"Oh. Not in hell? Cool."
I laughed at his dumb comment.

But then I found myself getting flustered. I forgot I had my hand on his bed, so when he grabbed it I was kind of surprised. I looked down at our tied hands, mine was barely visible as his was much bigger.

His other hand traveled up to his bare chest, were he had a chest tube at his rib.
"What's this?" he asked and patted on it.
"A chest tube. It's used to drain air or fluids from your chest, otherwise your lungs could collapse. And we don't want that, do we?

"I guess not." We both smiled at each other, and I could feel blood come up to my face, I was probably redder than a tomato.

"When can we get out of here?" Chase asked.
"Tomorrow, or the day after, or the next." I said
"I'm not quite sure."
Chase nodded and looked away.

"So," he began "how have you been?"
"Fine, I think."
"How's your dad feeling?" he then asked, and silence took over.
"He- um," I stuttered "my dad is dead." Chase's eyes widened; "Crap, I'm so sorry, I didn't know-"
"Its alright," I admitted "it's okay."

The room was silent again.
"I missed you, you know?" Chase said and I was taken aback, because I didn't want to say that I did too. I don't know why, I just didn't.
"I should probably get you a doctor" I said and attempted to get up from my chair.

"Did you miss me at all?" he then asked.
"Maybe, maybe not." I said after thinking a bit. I continued walking to the door.
"Should I take that as a no?" Chase asked.
I grabbed the door handle before replying; "Maybe, maybe not." I teased again and then opened the door.

I looked to the right, then to the left, I spotted a few doctors and nurses.
"Excuse me, nurse!" I said. A very kind-looking woman looked up at me, "Could you come here, please?"
The nurse dropped what she was doing and came directly to me.

"Posso esaminarti?"* she said. Right. I forgot we were in Italy.

When the nurse finished what she was doing and left the room, I went and sat back in my seat.
"Wanna sit here instead?" Chase asked and tapped on the bed.
"Next to you? It'll seem like we're cuddling."
"So? That's what couples do."

This man was the only one with the ability to dumbfound me.

"We're not together, Chase." I stated the obvious.
"Eh, we could be." He said.
I stared at him, unable to find any words.

"I'm good here, your mother will be coming soon, so I'll be going back to my hotel." I said.
"No." he simply answered and shook his head.

I laughed a little, which brought a smile to his face; "What do you mean?"
"How are you getting there?" Chase asked.
"I have rented a car- what does that have to do with anything?" I said, fully confused again.
"My mom has the keys to my house. She'll give you then so that you can stay there.

"Oh, you don't have to do that," I said and blushed.
"Hotels aren't that safe here, and besides. the house is big and you'll have your peace." Chase said.
"No, it's okay, really," I protested.

Chase stretched his arm and grabbed my hand again, which was in my lap. I saw him wince as he moved the slightest bit.
"Please, take them." Chase pleaded.

"Okay," I said after I gave up in convincing him.

"Ugh, I hate the hospital." Chase whined.
I scoffed; "What? I love them."
"That's just weird." he laughed "Also! Now that I remembered, when are you leaving?"
"Whenever you are."
"But what about your school?" Chase asked.
"Oh don't worry about it. I have everything under control." I stated.

I realised I was drifting away to my own world, unable to control myself. I slowly caressed his cheek and leaned closer to his face, until I could feel his breath tingling on my nose. I looked at him, studying his features. His eyes were wide and his lips were parted.

I kissed his cheek and let go of him. And I also mentally slapped myself. I got up from my chair and grabbed my coat from his bed.
"Your mom is coming soon, I better go."

I hung my coat on my forearm because it was still hot outside and walked to the door.
"Amaya," Chase stopped me.
"Hm?" I looked back at him.
"Thank you, for, uh" he stuttered, "sorry, this is usually not my line, but uh, thank you, for, saving me."

I smiled widely at him, and gave him a grateful nod, then I left his room.

And to my surprise, I was right. Victoria was standing with a doctor talking with him.

"Hey!" she said and came to me, she gave me side hug.
"Hi, mrs. Davian." I said again.
"Oh, dear, just call me Victoria will you?" she said and tapped my shoulder for reassurance.
"Okay. So Chase woke up, he's completely fine. You do not need to worry." I said.

"Did he tell you about the keys?" she asked.
"Oh yeah, but you really don't have to."
"But he wasn't to. So," Victoria said and reached into her handbag "here, the address is in this little card."

She gave me the keys an then left, entering Chase's room.

I clenched my hand with the keys, and left.
