Vidia thought she knew everything there was to know about misery

Vidia thought she knew everything there was to know about misery. However, going back to school the day after being beaten up in a dark parking lot brought a whole new definition to her book. If she even tried to slouch, the bruising on her stomach would cramp and not even foundation could have covered the bruising on her cheekbone. Of course, her mother hadn't noticed, and she probably never would.

Vidia's relationship with her mother had always been complicated. Her father had never really been in the picture and her mother was fairly detached from any motherly duties since Vidia had turned 13. She's kind of just raised her self since then, which also meant she was responsible for getting herself to school on time everyday.

She would have driven her car but she didn't have much money for gas so now it was mostly reserved for gigs so she could bring her equipment around easier. Riding her bike had proven to be more of a challenge than it would've been had she not been injured, but life goes on. Since it was the first day back, and her first day of senior year, had expected that she would have to get a textbook or two. But she also wasn't surprised to hear that Huntington had shot up all of their books, so there goes that.

Another year of not caring about school and passing with the minimum grades with shithole teachers. And of course her first period was with probably one of the worst teachers possible, Mr. G. He never actually taught the students, more so said one thing then left them to do whatever.

This was great for Vidia though, it always allowed for her to focus on other things. For example, the band, it was always in the back of her mind, a tiny spark that never quite died out. And she really tried to focus on it, really, but she couldn't help but overhear what practically every other student in the class was talking about.

Vidia wasn't sure if she quite believed it, but apparently some losers beat up Jeff last night at the fair. She had heard it earlier in the halls, but the proof was right there when the Rockbridge High king walked in on crutches. And she chuckled to herself watching him shove his ass in the face of a girl sitting at her desk.

Besides that dramatic entrance she hadn't paid much attention until a girl near her yelled, "Oh my god, Annie. They went to juvie, that's how!"

The two losers that had supposedly not only beat up Jeff had now gone to juvie. Vidia doesn't know how much more random shit she can handle from this school. Her eyebrows furrowed as she heard glass scatter onto the floor, seeing Jeff threaten one of the girls who had attacked him the night before.

Wow.

She pretty much just tuned out for the rest of the class, plugging her headphones into her phone and blasting music into her ears as she waited to see other people packing their stuff back in their bags. For now she played Bruise Violet by Babes in Toyland. All she did was fiddle with her pen for a couple of minutes before putting her stuff back in her bag. Just as she stood up from her desk and swung her backpack onto her back, the desk was bumped into her hip as one of the girls from before was slammed into it, a grunt escaping her mouth.

Vidia scoffed at the audacity of these shitty football players preying on some innocent girl. It was silent now that she was the last to leave the classroom, definitely evident that her music was leaking from her earbuds as Mr. G watched her leave the classroom.

There was an odd amount of time between now and her next period so Vidia decided to go look for her bandmates. It wasn't much of a search when she turned a corner and saw Roy with his arm around Lainey's shoulders and Colette standing right behind them.

She pulled the earbud out her right ear, turning it down slightly so she could still hear, "Hey, guys."

A smile grew on Lainey's face as she pushed her boyfriend's hand off of her and stepped forward to hug Vidia.

"We didn't hear from you last night. I wasn't sure if you were still alive."

As her arms squeezed around her midsection,Vidia tried her hardest to hide her wincing. They'd ask one too many questions that she just didn't really want to answer.

She lightly pushed Lainey off of her, the girl was often just too touchy for her own good, "Nah, I'm good. I was just really tired last night."

As she scratched the side of her neck, the hairs covering her cheek shifted and made the bruises visible. Vidia couldn't stop Colette from reaching up and pushing her chin to side to examine them.

"And where did this bruise come from?" Her deep, raspy voice asked. Vidia lightly pushed Colette's hand down, feeling her cool metal bracelets contrast against her warm skin.

"Come on, it's embarrassing." She impatiently tapped her foot against the dirty tile flooring, averting her eyes.

Colette crossed her arms over her chest, "Did you knock your face into your bass again? Or wait, no. I bet this time you punched yourself trying to pull your blanket up."

Vidia rolled her eyes as she watched her three friends break in to laughter. It was no secret that Vidia was quite clumsy every once in a while. But she couldn't help but join in on their contagious laughter, which was good for her because it made her lie that more believable.

"Fine, you got me. Laugh all you want but don't act like you haven't done it yourself."

Roy was practically bent over in hysterics as he tried to get out the sentence, "You must be one strong motherfucker to give yourself that bad of a bruise, Fang."

She scoffed playfully, but deep down she was absolutely grateful that her own stupidness could get her out of actually owning up to the abuse she endured not even twenty-four hours ago.

Vidia tucked her thumbs into her backpack straps, spinning around swiftly with her slippery boots and jokingly saying, "Man, you guys suck."

And she could still hear that contagious laughter bleeding into her ears as she jokingly stomped away to her math class.
