TRIGGER WARNING
angst, abuse

As soon as my face feels the sun's warmth, I unzip my tent and let the morning rays wash over me. The rising temperature seems to melt away the last traces of sleep from my skin. I sit up, rubbing my eyes as the sun's intense rays penetrate them. Shielding my eyes with one hand, I take a moment to survey the camp.

It's relatively quiet, and I notice that the camp is nearly empty. Carl had mentioned wanting to spend some quality time with Shane today, so I don't want to bother them. I spot Dale sitting in a chair, looking like he's about to doze off.

''Mornin' Dale,'' I greet him with a warm smile, which prompts him to open his eyes and meet my gaze.

He returns my smile. ''Well, hello there, sleepyhead.'' He sits up straight and takes off his hat. ''Sleep okay?'' He looks to the ground and backs up at me again.

I think back to the dreams I've had since everything started. They're never the same and I never fully remember them. But this night was different. I don't remember my dream, not one tiny detail, but it felt different. I feel different.

''Sure.'' I awkwardly smile, bringing myself away from my endless thoughts. ''Do you know where the others are?'' I ask him, trying to change the subject.

Dale looks at me with narrowed eyes for a second, not believing my words. ''Amy and them are down by the river.'' He answers as he gives up trying to pressure me to talk with his look. ''Carl is also down there with Shane if you want to join them.''

''No, thank you. I'll join the girls.'' I smile at him as I begin walking down to the river. I then turn around. ''Thank you, Dale.'' I smile at him as I turn back around and keep walking.
