TRIGGER WARNING
angst, blood, death
Around the crackling campfire, the night casts its shadows, flickering like silhouettes dancing in the warm glow. The scent of burning wood mingles with the aroma of freshly cooked fish as we sit in a circle, our faces illuminated by the fire's dance.I sit between Lori and Sophia. Lori is occupied with Carl, and I can't help but be mesmerized by the bracelet around my hand. Sophia's sudden words catch me off guard. ''Ew!'' She wines as she holds up some meat from the fish.
Everyone looks at her and laughs at her girly reaction. ''What is it?'' Carl asks as he peeks his head towards us.
''It's something from the fish. Gross.'' Sophia throws it to the ground. I look down at it and see its unique shape.
''It's its heart,'' I tell her as I pick up the piece she just threw away. ''Actually, if you cut it up,'' I say as I take out the knife Jim had given me earlier, he had told me to only use it when needed. This is a need for me.
''Is that a knife?'' Sophia's horrified eyes look down at my hand as the knife cuts through the heart. I look up at her in horror, quickly having forgotten who I'm showing this to.
Not only am I showing Sophia, the girl who is scared of everything, how to cut up a fish's heart, but also that I have a knife.
''Shhh.'' I press a finger to my lips, stealing a quick glance around the firelit to ensure Sophia's words haven't attracted unwanted attention.
