Chapter 9

"Miss Thompson, what was the intent of this impersonation?" Jackson slowly asked, strolling up to the witness stand. I rolled my eyes and took long blinks, wishing to god i was sleeping. 

"I was just trying to be funny, everyone in our office makes jokes and as a matter of fact Miss Lunders encourages us to be informal" Rachel replied formally.

"I can't win this" I whispered with Donna listening next to me.

"What are you gonna do?" She whispered back

"I'm gonna play the woman, not the case" I said, standing up as Jackson was finished

"You say you expected to be passed over for a promotion, correct?" I asked, stepping forward

"Yes" Rachel smiled simply

"And yet you applied three times"

"Yes"

"And you were never promoted."

"As i said, yes" Rachel began to get sassy

"When Nora Ginnesse was promoted, you wrote scathing emails to the rest of your coworkers-"

"No, not scathing, the intent was to be funny" Rachel interrupted

"Oh right you like to be funny" I replied, seeing Harvey smirk beside me. 

"Who doesn't like to laugh?" Rachel said

"Someone who's reputation has been ruined"

"Objection" Jackson said

"Just a thought" i remarked

"It's testifying" Jackson continued

"Sustained, Miss Redwood, Questions." Harvey replied, his eyes never leaving me

"I'm sorry your honour, forgive me i was just trying to be funny" I smirked, watching Harvey try to hide a smile

"On your performance review, Lena Lunders wrote, good work ethic, lacks skills. Do you think that's a fair assessment?" I returned my attention to Rachel

"Fair? I don't know" Rachel replied

"Well your coworkers were promoted, and your boss was calling you mediocre. Are you mediocre?" I asked. I was going all in, i just really wanted this to be over. 

"No" Rachel replied, almost offended

"So why haven't you been promoted?" 

"I don't know"

"Do you think you deserve better?"

"Doesn't everyone?" 

"So why haven't you tried?" I was really laying into her. I just needed something to win my case.

"i have tried!" 

"Why haven't you improved?" 

"I didn't say i haven't improved" Rachel started to raise her voice. I didn't care, i had to stick it to Jackson. 

"Well, your review did, your five years without a promotion did. You were so angry you weren't moving forward that you lashed out at your boss-"

"Objection! Testifying!" Jackson stood up and shouted, pointing at finger at me but i just kept talking over him

"But everyone was moving past you"

"So what?" Rachel retorted. Jackson continued to shout objection behind me.

"People making good on their job-"

"Badgering your honour" He continued. It's like i didn't hear it, i was in a world. 

"People who could cut it"

"I can cut it!" Rachel slammed her hand on the surface. I was so into it i hadn't noticed tears in her eyes. My face immediately dropped. The whole room went silent as Rachel held back tears. I stood there guilt ridden. Harvey stared at me, surprised at what i had done. 

I gulped and looked down, starting to move back

"Excuse me your honour." I said as i moved over to Jackson

I lowered my voice and looked down at him

"Settlements still on the table" I whispered

"What?" He replied, baffled

"Let's settle, same deal" 

"No i'm good" He replied after a moment of thinking

"Excuse me" I scoffed

"I've seen this before Redwood, you feel bad for your friend so your offering me a settlement because you don't want to hurt her feelings anymore than you already have. But i'd rather see if you'd break her" He said. He's such an ass. I had half a mind to walk away and never come back. 

"Counselor, would you like to proceed?" I looked up at Harvey, shame in eyes. 

"No, your honour" People looked at me as if i had a gun to my head. 

"Are you sure" 

"Yes your honour" i sat down and Donna gave me a reassuring smile. 

"Well then, normally we'd move on to closing statements however it's been a long week and i think we all know where this is going. Court rules in favour of the defendant. This court is adjourned" Harvey hit the gavel and i just sat there in defeat as people congratulated Jackson. 

"Miss Redwood" Harvey called as people started to leave. I went up to speak to him

"What the hell was that? People were expecting great things from you, instead you went soft. Jessica's going to think i only hired you to keep me company. What were you thinking?" He scolded. I just looked at the ground and apologised before leaving, not letting him say any more.

I stayed around the firm a bit, finishing some last minute work before deciding to head out. I stopped by Harvey's office before leaving

"Do you need anything? Cause otherwise i'm gonna head out" I said, standing at the door

"Celebratory drinks with the associates?" He replied deadpan, staring at his computer.

"Yep" i replied sarcastically

"And what exactly are you celebrating?" He asked, looking up at me

"You know what Harvey? You can save the disappointment, i know what i did" I said

"Do you? Because what i saw is you backed off cause you were afraid of hurting your friends feelings" He said, leaning back in his chair

"It was a fake trial alright? I weighed the pros and cons and i decided it wasn't worth hurting someone for the result" 

"The result is, you just told everyone including myself that your weak and you don't have what it takes" He said, standing up and stepping towards me 

"Thats real nice Harvey, thanks" I said, getting a bit pissed off. 

"Don't get sassy with me. You know it makes you ten times hotter" He smirked, maintaining a menacing eye contact. 

"Oh yeah? And what are you gonna do about it" I said, standing my ground. He stepped even closer to me, until we were a mere two inches away from each other. 

"You're speaking dangerous words Redwood." He whispered as he looked into my eyes.

"Oh you like it" I whispered back before turning on my heel and walking out the office, leaving Harvey scoffing and retreating back to his desk. 

Fuck that was intense.
