I try call Libby but there's no reply. After the third time it's gone to voicemail I give up. She's probably just busy today.
There's a knock at my front door and I trudge from the kitchen to open it. As I open it, a frown settles on my face.
"Mom?"
"Can I come in?" My mother asks, her black-grey hair tucked neatly behind her ears.
"Sure," I say and she steps in. She looks nervous and tired. I can see this from the way she twists her ring around her finger and how big, black bags hand under her eyes.
"Is everything alright?" I ask. She doesn't really like coming to visit me. This is quite a surprise.
"Yes. Yes. Make me some coffee will you? I haven't had a cuppa in a long time," Evelyn says and sits on my couch. Her knee bounces anxiously. I nod and rush into the kitchen to make her coffee. Over the noise from the kettle, I can hear her fiddling in the living room. I quickly whip up a cup and bring it to her. She's holding the dolphin statue that has been in my life for as long as I can remember. She turns it over in her hands, lighting bouncing off of the blue tails.
"Here," I say and hand her the mug. She smiles and sits back down, putting the dolphins on the shelf again. I pull up a chair and sit opposite her. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"What? A mother can't visit her own son?"
"You never do. I'm just curious," I say and lean forward onto my elbows, waiting for her to explain. I know she'll crack. My mother never gets nervous but when she does she's fragile. She takes a long sip from the mug and looks down into its contents, avoiding my gaze. She finally sighs and looks up at me.
"Fine. You got me. I've been worried about you. I don't like you living alone," she mumbles.
"I've been living alone for literally my whole life. It's nothing different. What's really going on?" My mother glares at me over the rim of her coffee cup. She moves carefully, placing the cup on the edge of the sofa.
"You haven't been seeing anything or at least, anyone, strange have you?" She asks cautiously, scared of my reaction. Something flickers at the back of my mind. A girl's voice, sweet and filled with sadness; Tobias... I never meant to leave you... I can't access the memory. I can feel it's there but I can't remember it. It makes me feel this surge of warmth in my body. I frown. Why can't I remember it?
"Not that I know of," I say.
"So you haven't seen any... I don't know... People who you thought were dead?" Another memory flickers. Don't trust so easily...
"No," I say with finality. I have no idea what she's on about. I'm more worried about the memories that I can't remember. Evelyn nods slightly and downs the rest of her coffee in one go. She stands up and I follow her lead.
"It was good catching up, Tobias," she says.
"You didn't even ask how I was."
"Too much too talk about, so little time. I've really got to get going. I really did miss you," my mother says and gives me a hug. Her arms wrap around me and I feel her fingers touch the back of my neck. Something shoots through my head, a blinding, white light. I jump back. My mother tilts her head to the side, studying me.
"Thank you for the coffee. I'll see you soon." With that, she turns on her heel and walks out of my apartment, slamming the door behind her. I touch the back of my neck and I feel a small lump there. How did that get there?
My mother is hiding something and I'm going to find out what it is. I'm also going to find out why I can't remember that memory and what it was... Before I forget it forever.
