Achmetropolis, Hospital
Six Day's LaterTech's POV
It's been six agonizing days since Penny fell into a coma. I've been waiting for that moment when her warm, kind mismatched eyes—one green and one blue—would flutter open. But it hasn't happened yet. I did eat, but only to stay by Penny's side, and when I rest, I use the bed next to hers. The others come by to check on me, but it gets annoying when they try to get me to leave and let Rev or someone else watch over Penny. I can't bear to leave her side... not after what she mouthed to me that day. Remembering it, I rubbed my face, exhaustion hitting me. I may be resting, but not as much as the others want.
I dropped my hand from my face onto my thigh, staring at Penny's sleeping form. I scooted the chair I was sitting on closer, holding her hand in mine. Leaning my forehead on the bed near her hand, I eventually fell asleep holding her hand.
Penny's POV
After what felt like an eternity, I finally felt refreshed and light. Today, I managed to flutter my eyes open, seeing the white ceiling and hearing the annoying beeping of the heart monitor. I turned my head to the right, feeling a weight on my arm, and saw a certain sleeping coyote. The sight of him holding my hand made me blush and warmed my heart, but I noticed the dark bags under his eyes, which worried me.
The door opened, and my eyes brightened when Ace and Lexi walked in. When they noticed I was awake, I quickly placed my index finger to my lips to shush them before they woke Tech. They made an 'o' with their mouths, walked over, and we started whispering to avoid waking Tech.
"How are you feeling, Pen?" Ace asked, concern evident in his voice.
I smiled at him. "I'm... okay? I feel refreshed but still tired, if that makes sense?"
"That's understandable. You've been in a coma for six days. I'll go let the doctor know you're awake. Lex, why don't you keep her company?" Ace suggested.
Lexi smiled and nodded. Ace walked out of the room as Lexi sat down at the edge of the bed on the other side, brushing my light blue bangs aside from my face.
"You had us worried..." she murmured. I felt a pang of guilt, which she seemed to notice. She smiled softly. "Don't feel guilty, okay? You did an amazing job. The three villains we took down are in jail, awaiting their sentences."
"...I'm glad. Thanks, Lexi. You're a good friend. Also... why does Tech have bags under his eyes?"
She glanced over at the sleeping coyote and frowned. "He never left your side... He ate in here, slept on the other bed in this room, and only took bathroom breaks. He feels responsible for not stopping that water twin villain from trapping you."
I turned my gaze to Tech with warmth and sadness. I felt bad. I never wanted him to feel at fault.
"He shouldn't feel that way... It's my fault for not reacting fast enough, but what's done is done. Lex, can you get some food for Tech and me? And some ice-cold water? I'm so thirsty."
She giggled softly. "Of course. Why don't you wake Tech up? He'll be so happy to see you're awake."
She stood up and left the room. I turned my head to look at Tech, my eyes softening. I found the button on my left side to raise the head of the bed and placed my hand on his head, stroking his hair and ears. He smiled and giggled in his sleep, nuzzling against my hand. He sat up, groaning and rubbing his forehead, yawning.
