HI so a little background before i start bc this song makes absolutely no sense without context:
i wrote this for an english class, it's based off a short story called "the lesson" by toni cade bambara, and the plot of it is young black kids learning about class differences for the same time. the first verse and chorus outline these things. it's also based off of an essay written about the language used in the short story: african-american vernacular english (or AAVE for short) and the second verse kinda talks about that. anyways there's your context okie byeee

"a rich man's game" december 13, 2023

verse 1
ain't even wanna be here
and "i'm ready to speak on that"
"leaning on the mailbox being surly"
a miss moore word, the fact

pre-chorus 1

ole lady made us go in
slumped around the place, ain't gon' buy somethin'
nobody around got the money for this
either way, "ain't nobody gonna beat me at nuthin"

chorus 1
it's a rich man's game
we ain't in on it
then we feel the shame
as we gaze upon it
it's a rich man's game
could buy so much
we don't look the same
we ain't got enough

verse 2

uncensored and resistant
displaying culture and values
the black youth and children
long been subdued

prechorus 2
becoming aware of their class and position
in society, then feel the shame
no one close can afford such nice things
it's a, a rich man's game

chorus 2
it's a rich man's game
they don't fit the mold
the rebellion lane
resist what they're told
it's a rich man's game
become aware of it
who'll take the blame?
who'll rise above it?
it's a rich man's game
we ain't in on it
then we feel the shame
as we gaze upon it
it's a rich man's game
could buy so much
we don't look the same
we ain't got enough
