After I was done scrubbing, I proceeded to go take a shower when I bumped into ma'am Judith. Seeing me,she had a scowl on her face.

"You."

She said with menace.

"Do not think you can fool anyone. You might have the young master in your favour, but I can see right through your facade. And now you have Sir Daniel, talking to me rudely. I will not be surprised that good for nothing Vera is part. Filling sir Daniel's head with unnecessary thoughts to make him go against me. No wonder she can not give birth. God knows how she would have been a bad mother."

I was surprised to hear her say that. Why is she this way.

"Ma'am, I do not mean to sound rude, but what have I done to you. I have done every task given to me by you, and I do not shirk my duty. What exactly have I done for you to dislike me so much. If I have done something, i am sor-"

"Do not talk to me with that filthy mouth of yours. What insolence. Know your place and keep in mind that I am still in charge of the servants in this household."

"That's enough, Judith."

We both turned our heads to see an angry looking Vera.

"What the hell is wrong with you? Do you not see Bessie still recovering? What is your problem?"

"Better watch your tongue when talking to me, Vera. I am still in charge. "

"You are only in charge because I did not want to be in charge. And you know it. I give you the respect because I want to. Not because I am afraid of you. You and I both know very damn well that I did not want to be the head of the servants because I do not need a title,unlike you. So better pick on someone your own size than to try intimidating an innocent girl. And beside, who knows, in the future, she might end up being the Lady of the house"

I had never seen ma'am Vera this angry. I just stood there, in shock,with tears in my eyes from Judith's insults.

"Lady of the house, you say. Ha ha, double, ha ha. You wish, you know it is something that will never happen, or have you forgotten, the young master is betrothed to the duke's daughter. Is this what you have been feeding Bessie with? Lies? Do not think of something as nauseating as this. The young master may have a soft spot for Bessie, but he can never be with someone like Bessie. Stop filling her head with that. Now I feel sorry for the girl, allowing herself to be fooled by you. Whether you gave up the title or not,I am still in charge, and my word is the law."

"Then I guess I will have to tell sir Daniel that you are bullying Bessie. "

"You wouldn't dare,Vera. "

"Just try me, Judith. "

They were both in each others face ,shooting daggers at each other. They were at it until a group of servants came chattering excitedly. Seeing the weird position we were in, they shushed and left quickly.

"Come, Bessie, what did the young master say about you resting."

With that,Vera pulled me gently, leading to the door. Before we closed the door, we heard Judith's voice from behind.

"Mark my words,you will be sorry you ever crossed me."

We walked quietly to Vera's room. I was dying inside with questions. But I could ask because Vera still had an angry face.

"You know you can talk to me, Bessie."

I watched her slowly sink unto her bed,with a tired face.

"I am sorry ma'am Vera. If I did not talk back to ma'am Judith, all this would not have happened. "

"Never apologise for doing the right thing. She was wrong to try to use her position to do whatever she wanted . She had it coming. No one should be oppressed, no matter the gender,race,religion, or anything.
You are with child Bessie. A precious gift. You should not be treated this way."

"Ma'am Judith said something about... you not being able to give birth."

I started carefully.Vera had a sad smile on her face when I said it. I felt guilty for asking.

"I was a young girl once,haha. Full of spirit,and I was boisterous all the time. I fell in love with a handsome man and we got married. We tried to have children, but it just did not work. One fateful day, I noticed that I had missed my monthly course, and my suspicions turned true when I realised that I was with child. I shared the news with my husband, and he was overjoyed. He went out to celebrate, and on his way, he got ambushed and killed. When the news got to me,I panicked, and then I felt warm liquid running down my legs;I had miscarriaged. I was so heartbroken. But I found my light at the end of the tunnel when I got to work here,as a nanny to Daniel. It helped me,Danny's family, took me in with wide arms, and I felt at home."

"Oh ma'am, I am so sorry."

"It's okay,I may have lost my husband and child. But I gained a family, and now thanks to you,a grandchild."

She smiled and put her hands on my tummy.

"Judith was the second person to work here. The lady of the house wanted me to be the head of servants since I knew the house well,but I did not want to. Having the chance to help take care of Daniel was my greatest joy, so I opted that the title be given to Judith. "

"Oh,"

That was all I could say.

"You are lucky, Bessie dear. I am here with you all the way. Do not listen to what Judith says. Right now,your sole focus should be on the little blessing in your tummy. I will handle her myself. You should rest. "

"But ma'am, i have rested enough."

"Mm,I see. Very well then,let us go for a stroll. You also need to exercise. Trust me, in a few months, you'll be wobbling about because then your tummy would be bigger. "

She chuckled, and together, we left to the yard to take a stroll. She really is a great companion. With her around,I didn't feel like I had lost a mother because she filled that space. She is right. I have to focus on my child now.
