Trigger Warnings: Descriptions of injuries (just at the beginning)

"Josie, stop picking at the stitches," Jonah snaps, and I quickly put my hands back down into my lap. Moments later, I reach up and flatten the bandages back down, clearing my throat and pretending I hadn't almost ripped the stitch completely out of my arm.

After a few minutes, he speaks up again and says, "I can't believe that worked."

"What?" I ask, looking over at him. He has two switches on the cut under his eyebrow, but other than that he didn't have any major injuries. His lip is busted, and the hospital offered to give him some ice, but he told them he'd be alright as he gave them a lopsided smile.

Mike and I had to get stitches, me on my arms and him on his legs. Abby got a few Band-Aids, and Kaylen had to get her upper thigh wrapped with gauze. When the hospital staff asked how we had gotten hurt, Kaylen made up a very convincing story about hiking and the domino effect leading all of us to fall. The staff said we were lucky we weren't hurt worse, and all of us really had to try not to laugh.

We were lucky. But not just for that reason.

"We saved them," he says, a bright smile on his face. "We saved Sam. Who would've guessed she would've even been there?" He glances up to the rearview mirror and hums to himself, quickly getting into the turning lane. I see a Wendy's in the distance, and I know Kaylen must've signaled for him to go to it.

"I'm glad we got her out," I admit, nodding a bit as I lean back against the headrest and close my eyes. "Do you feel better now?"

"Much," he replies, and the car rolls to a stop as we wait for a chance to turn left. This particular Wendy's isn't the one we saw coming into town. In fact, we're about halfway home and the last rays of sunset have sunk down past the horizon. I'm sure we're all pretty hungry by now. I know I am.

After he makes the turn and finds his way into the Wendy's parking lot, I open my eyes to watch him park and then slip out of the car to stretch my arms and legs.

The doctors gave me some weak pain meds, and they seem to cover up the stinging aches quite nicely.

Once we're all out, we head into Wendy's and order what we want. Kaylen and Mike argue about who's going to pay, and while they were going at each other's throats with glares and short statements, Jonah slipped the money over and he, Abby, and I went to go get our drinks. We all laughed about it once they realized it.

We sit down at a table with six chairs, and Kaylen and I sandwich Jonah, who sits across from Mike. Abby sits across from me.

We're quiet for a moment, and Abby puts her head down on the table to "rest her eyes". She's out like a light the moment her eyes are closed, and the rest of us talk quietly so as to not wake her.

"I guess I'll lead the way all the way back to your house, then," Jonah says to Mike, and the older man nods his head slowly. "We'll drop you off, then we can all go our separate ways."

"You'll take Josie home?" Kaylen asks, and Jonah nods to her. She leans around Jonah to look at me and asks, "Is that alright?" I know why she's asking, and I know I should say no. She's trying to make sure my home is alright, not if I am. She's asking if I have heat yet. If I have blankets. If I have a home that is good for me to go back to.

"Yeah," I say, nodding my head with a smile. She nods a bit and turns away, and then she has to go get our food trays. Mike goes to help her, leaving me and Jonah and a sleeping Abby. I wait for him to say something about me still not having heat, but the words never come. He just sips his Sprite and looks down at the table, feeling his busted lip with his index finger.
