Trigger Warnings: Mentions of death and trauma

New Year's Day.

I happily spent the Eve with Jonah and his family at his house, eating smores made in the microwave because it was storming and we couldn't do a bonfire. Mike and Abby joined us just before dark for the celebration, though there wasn't much of a party after ten thirty. We had all been trying desperately to keep our eyes open, and by the time midnight rolled around, we had lost almost everyone to exhaustion.

Now, a few hours later— few enough that it is still pitch black in the living room aside from the twinkling Christmas tree that still stands tall in the corner—, I find myself waking up for apparently no reason. Exhaustion attempts to drag my eyes closed almost immediately, but I know that means something had to have woken me up. I wouldn't just suddenly wake up if I was this tired.

I sit up and look around, first turning to the front door which lurks behind the loveseat I'm sleeping on. Outside, the world is quiet aside from the sheets of rain pouring down. I can see droplets hitting the front window and streaking down the glass on the top of the door. The tin-roof of the shed in the back yard sings just loud enough for me to hear, but on its own it isn't loud enough to wake me up.

Maybe it thundered.

"Josie." I quickly turn to the kitchen archway to see Abby standing there, smiling at me. I don't know how I didn't notice her at first, but her excited grin and small waving gesture prompt me to instantly kick off my blanket, hop off the loveseat, and follow her back into the kitchen. She says nothing as we cross the tile flooring, but I know by the feeling in the air that she's leading me to something important. And I think I know what it is.

The back porch of Jonah's house is covered by a wooden roof Todd built himself, and it's screened in so bugs can't bother them in the summer. Leading out to the backyard is a screen door that doesn't close right anymore, and every time it storms or when the wind kicks up, the door flaps open and closed. Amber will duct tape it shut if she thinks about it, but tonight is not one of those nights where the thought about it.

However, in addition to the back door swinging open and closed, I also hear the telltale sound of whispering voices drifting in through the cracked back door.

For a split second I worry about who could be outside, but then my common sense kicks in and I remember Abby is the one leading me there.

We step outside onto the porch and we're greeted by a rush of frigid cold and misty air. But we're also greeted by several smiling faces, all their mouths falling silent at the sight of me.

I turn around to close the door behind me before I give the spirits my full attention, and I find some of them grinning from ear to ear.

Jeremy is the first to verbally acknowledge me. All he says is, "Josie", but it still brings me close to tears. Hearing his voice now after all these weeks of wondering how they're doing... it's a lot.

"Hey guys," I say quietly, and Abby walks over to stand with Cass, who is currently looking happily at the other spirits. Cassidy sits on a chair next to him, her legs cross-crossed and her elbows balanced on her knees. Abby turns and smiles at me when she gets to her destination, pride in her eyes and her body radiating excitement.

I turn back to Jeremy and take note of his missing rabbit ears. I say nothing, because I know why they aren't there, and another question falls from my lips. "How are you all?"

"Good, thanks to you," Cassidy says, sitting up a bit and smiling softly at me. Her dark brown hair is pulled up into pigtails with red ribbons, and her brown eyes shine with the reflection of the porch light. She wears a black shirt and red overalls, something I didn't notice back in the pizzeria. I can also see the scar on her neck, faded but still present. She feels powerful out here. It's the same power I've noticed but ignored in Abby. The same power I feel in Cass and Charlie.
