CHAPTER 16

Ava and Brett met up and went to the barbecue
together. The place was mildly lively with people standing and talking in small groups and low music playing in the background. The aroma of the barbecue filled the open space. There were few lights here and there as the moon's light was enough to illuminate the place.

As they got to the heart of the party Anne went to them. “ Finally you're here”.

“ I wasn't sure of the time” Ava shrugged as she let out the white lie.

Brett's phone began ringing and he excused himself to pick up the call.

“I was worried when I saw you couldn't make it to the introduction this morning. I wanted to come over but Payton made us go with her to do some shopping” Anne said after Brett had left.

“Oh, I'm sorry. I woke up late and we couldn't make it.”

“We?” Anne asked as she raised a brow. As Ava was about to reply Anne's eyes widened. “ You slept with him?!” She said in a screaming whisper.

Ava's face instantly became red. Anne's reaction took Ava by surprise and she was taken aback for a moment before she could respond.

"No, nothing happened between us. He just carried me to my bed last night after I fell asleep. It was platonic ."

Ava felt a sudden rush of nerves wash over her as she tried to explain what had happened the night before. It was the truth.. But would Anne take her word for it?

Anne's eyes narrowed and she seemed suspicious of Ava's answer.

"Why was he there in your room in the first place?" Anne asked curiously. "You're telling me that he spent the entire night there and you didn't...do... anything?"

Ava froze up for a moment as she tried to think of a convincing explanation.

"He... he just stayed there because we were both tired and we decided we should rest. We were watching a movie together and I fell asleep and he just stayed there with me…”

Anne let out a laugh. "Look, even if something did happen between you guys I wouldn't mind, you're both grown ups and you can do whatever you want. I'm just saying... it's obvious you guys have something going on and it would be better all around if you just admitted it instead of keeping up this charade of it being purely platonic.”

Ava's face was a mixture of emotions. She was both relieved and embarrassed. Ava remembered how she had thought about the possibility of something happening between her and Brett before, but she had never acted on those thoughts. She had always pushed it aside and tried to remind herself that they were just friends.

After Anne's comment, she could no longer deny that there was something going on between them. She knew it deep down but she had never admitted it to herself before. She was glad that Anne finally brought it up so she could finally acknowledge her true feelings. But she still wasn't sure how Brett felt towards her

"W-well..." she trailed off, trying to think of what to say next. She wanted to admit that she liked Brett, but she was afraid that he only thought of her as a friend. " He doesn't... I mean I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me like that... “

Anne laughed again and patted Ava's shoulder. "Oh honey, it's obvious he likes you. He spent a whole night in your room and hasn't left your side since you two met. Do you really think it's all platonic between you two?"

Ava felt a sharp jerk in her chest as she heard a familiar masculine voice calling out her name. She froze in her tracks, she recognised that voice, it had been months but she couldn't mistake it for anyone else. Seth.
