Heroes always win laurels.
Do you know why?
If you would think back to Ancient Rome, you might find them everywhere. Laurel on this, laurels on that.
But they originated in Greece, where a sudden tragic love story occurred again. There was a nymph- Daphne- and she had befallen the unfortunate fate of being cast in life's plays as one of the sun gods lovers. Guess what happened?
She died.
Well, not really, she essentially got turned into a laurel tree by choice. Now, that is a fine way to die. But that's not the problem here, why? Why did she choose to even die then?
Apollo. So now it's his symbol. Of (how ironic) victory. What sort of victory is the death of a lover?
A damned one.
Ash was feeling like she would rather be a laurel tree right now; the hours flew by and now she sat awaiting the sun.
She sat beside Percy and watched as the sky slowly turned into a lighter shade of blue.
"So, what's your favourite colour?"
She turned to see where the voice came from, Percy Jackson grinned at her albeit a bit sadly. He tilted his head in response to her silence.
"Why?" She asked smirking back at him, her brown eyes looking darker in the night sky.
"Well- you're kinda off stuck with me for a while if you're coming to camp. And I think knowing your favourite colour is the best way to become friends!" He paused and looked down at his attire, blue hoodie, and blue jeans. "Mines blue by the way."
"Wow! Never would have guessed," she replies sarcastically before answering "Mines...brown- like a bit darker than beige."
He smiled, genuinely "There now we are friends. My favourite season is...summer cause I can swim then!"
She laughed, "So, my favourite season is summer as well, what are we now? Best friends?"
"If you want to be!"
They both laughed together and for a second in this world of monsters and darkness; there was light. Warm and comforting, keeping a ray of hope visible to those who defend it.
Ash felt at peace in that moment, scars and broken hearts were not something on her mind. Laurel trees and death didn't linger either.
She watched as Thaila and Grover approached her and Percy from her peripheral vision. They looked anxious, she assumed they wanted to know what Artemis has said to her friend so she moved her attention elsewhere at Percy recounted the events.
The Hunters had broken up the camp as quickly as they had set it, sure, Ash had seen quicker. The girls had a thing where they would time each wrap up and open up and see if they could beat their highest score. Life was always something of a competition when you are basically immortal. Her mind flickered back to a couple years ago in Apulia, Italy when their highest wrap up was declared as 4 minutes 30 second and 11 milliseconds. The partying lasted hours after that.
Her attention was brought back to the present after Grover looked like he was sick.
'The last time the Hunters were at camp, things didn't go so well..."
The brown haired girl laughed- " 'Didn't go so well!' you're putting that mildly- they brunt down a couple cabins I think!"
Percy looked alarmed as he proceeded to wonder "How did they even get here anyway, they just showed up out of nowhere!"
"And Bianca joined them," Thaila said, disgusted. "It's all Zoë's fault! That stuck-up, no good-"
"Who could blame her?" Grover said
"Eternity with Artemis..." He heaved a sigh.
