//CHAPTER 15.4

Orange

In the dim glow of twilight,

Words spill like water.

Each syllable a pebble,

Skipping across the surface of doubt.

...................................................

Orange was just finishing telling Elise and Purple his story. He told them everything.

He told them about how he found the blocks, he told them about Red threatening him, he told them about his decision to go to OddWorld to help Elise, he didn't leave anything out.

But then, he had told them the story of that one fateful night.

The night when...when Chase had died. The night when all of their caretakers had died, how they had killed them.

Orange had been terrified that Purple would respond in the same way as Blue, and just leave him alone. But so far, Purple showed no signs of doing that.

However, the vent monster was very quiet as Orange finished his tale. Orange really wished that Purple didn't have to know, but he deserved to know the truth.

He deserved to have the chance to change.

Orange finally fell silent after he was sure he covered all of the points, and looked between Purple and Elise as they sat in silence.

Elise was absentmindedly stroking the pink Lookie, which she had apparently picked up before she had left OddWorld. Orange acted like he didn't care, but in reality, he was grateful that she had stolen it.

It had a certain charm to it, which helped to soothe his nerves, even if it was only a little bit. Orange smiled as it let out a small hum.

He looked back up at Purple, wondering what the other Rainbow Friend was thinking. Did he believe him? Would he be okay after this?

Purple eventually sighed, curling up with his thick piece of clothing (Elise had called it a hoodie) wrapped tightly around him.

"Orange..." He said, sounding very tired all of a sudden. "You do realize what you're implying?" He asked the smaller monster.

Orange nodded. "Believe me, I do. And I don't like it anymore than you do." He glanced at Elise, and then continued, "But we can fix this. We have to."

Purple shook his head slightly, his large eyes hardly visible as he was covering himself. Orange could see them glistening with unshed tears.

"I...I just...I need a moment." Purple mumbled, lowering his head back down so that his face wasn't visible.

Orange's gaze of concern turned to one of pity as he remembered how he had felt for the longest time. Purple was probably going through the same thing.

Orange couldn't help but remember all his nights of struggling, constantly hating himself for what he had done, being forced to keep it to himself for the Rainbow Friends' own good.

Little had he known that Red was desperate to keep it a secret. He shuddered as he thought about what the scientist would have done had he stayed in the lab any longer.

Purple finally took a deep breath and wiped his face with the sleeve of his hoodie. "It...it's not that I don't believe you Orange...but...do you have any actual proof that we...did all that? M-maybe it was a dream and it's unrelated-"

"No! I swear it wasn't Purple. You've got to believe me." Orange said. He knew it was real. What else could explain where their family went?

Orange's thoughts raced as he grew worried that Purple would abandon him just like Blue. There must have been some way to convince him. He felt bad having to talk about this, as it also pained him to see Purple upset, but they needed his help.

Then suddenly, he had an idea.

"I've got it! Purple, if you go back into the playplace and into my cave, you'll find something underneath the large rock in the corner of my ledge." He said. "Bring them here and I'll show you."

Orange felt a prick of doubt as Purple nodded hesitantly and quickly entered the vent again. He wondered if Purple would remember Chase. Probably not, but at least the drawings would be enough proof.

Elise held the Lookie close as she watched Purple leave, "You...you went through all that?" She asked him.

Orange nodded slightly. "I...yeah. It...hasn't been easy. I still don't even know if I deserve to be free. I just...I don't want any more humans to die." He said almost breathlessly, the subject making him highly uncomfortable.

"I don't want my friends to keep doing this. They...they're just confused. If I can just get them to see the truth, then maybe we can be different. But...Red will never let that happen." He continued.

Elise nodded and the Lookie squeaked pitifully, almost as if it were listening too.

"Well...I guess I'm helping you then." Elise said confidently, closing her eyes as she nodded firmly.

"W-what? But it's dangerous!" Orange yelped, shocked.

Elise opened her eyes again, looking a little more solemn. "I owe you. Plus...I don't want anyone else to die. Not...not like my friends. And...my brother." She said, clutching the Lookie tighter.

Orange turned around to look at her seriously. "Wait, what was that? Your brother was with them?" He said, suddenly feeling immense guilt. If only he had known...then maybe he could have saved him too.

But surprisingly, Elise shook her head, "No, he wasn't....you see...he-" Elise started, but was cut off by a loud sound coming from the trees around them.

Elise and Orange both fell silent as they heard it. Orange whipped his head around, trying to locate the source. The sound...it was familiar somehow.

"What- it can't be." Orange gasped, and Elise looked at him with wide eyes, the Lookie in her arms whimpering fearfully.

Orange instinctively moved in front of Elise, holding his arms out to prevent her from getting hurt. "Please no..." He muttered, just as a large shape pushed its way through the trees.

It was exactly what he had feared.

The big figure which was now pushing its way through the foliage and towards them was none other than a very furious Blue.
