Chloe smithI adjusted my dress and smoothed out as many wrinkles as I could looking at my self in the mirror in-front of me. It had been 4 days since my sister's passing today was the day of her funeral. The day I had been dreading since I fled my grandmothers house.
Paige came into the bathroom holding Nicky in her arms. He was dressed in black dress pants and a black polo. He looked as cute as ever. Paige was dressed in black dress pants and a black button up. She looked very good. But seeing her hold Nicky so dearly and be here for me in this time of need made me love her even more.
"You look beautiful baby." She said wrapping her free arm around my waist and pulling me back against her chest. "Thank you." I said leaning my head against her as she placed a soft kiss to my temple. We made our way out to the car that was loaded with our bags. Due to the fact that our flight to Seattle was not long after the funeral.
We decided to just take Nicky with us as after we visit nika in Seattle Paige will be going to visit Azzi in her home town not too far from where I will be in Alexandria. So I'm hoping by then all this stuff with my parents will have blown over and he can go back to staying with them until I graduate.
It was a short drive as the funeral service was being held at a church not too far from where we had been staying. Once we got there Paige and I walked through the main door. I held Nicky in my arms as we greeted my family. My mom and dad avoiding me like the plague.
Once the service had started the pastor said a few words before it was time for my mom to speak. She sniffled back tears before she began. "Madeline was my angel. She was loving and caring. She was my world my best friend. She made me love being a mom. Mine and Maddie's relationship was stronger than mine and my other child's. And because of this I always felt the need to stand up for her. She may not have always made the right decision. But she was still my daughter and I will always love her." My mom's words hit me like a slap across the face.
I always knew my parents favored my sister. All the baby's first Christmas ornaments that they made sure to hang every year on the tree. When I didn't have a single one. The boxes full of baby pictures and sentimental items that belonged to Madeline. I had one box with my wrist band from the hospital the outfit I came home in and an empty scrapbook.
She was always celebrated for the smallest achievements. She got an A on a test we went out for dinner. I got an A on a test I was told good job. I knew I wasn't the best daughter at times. Often distant and jealous. But that didn't mean I wasn't their daughter.
I felt the tears begin to stream down my face. I quickly wiped them away. Before anyone could notice. After the words my father said my grandmother leaned over to me asking me if I would like to say anything.
I shook my head no. There was nothing to say about Madeline. Me and her never had a close relationship. She was just my big sister. I loved her obviously. But my Maddie who would play dress up with me and braid my hair died a long time ago. I had already mourned and moved on.
Once the funeral was finally over. I said my goodbyes to my grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. My mom still not speaking to me or even looking in my direction. "She'll come around." My dad said to me as he hugged me.
......
We had just arrived in Seattle. We quickly went to the hotel room and changed. Paige wearing black pants and a #1 Seattle storm jersey as that was Nikas new number. As I was changing Nicky Paige came into the room. "I have a surprise." She said excitedly holding her hands behind her back.
I turned around coming face to face with her. She pulled out a jersey the same one she was wearing just in Nicky's size. "Oh my god Paige that is the cutest thing I have ever seen." I said taking the jersey from her hands. "I bought it on Amazon after we decided to bring him with." She said excitedly.
I slipped the jersey over Nicky's head before picking him up and showing it to Paige. "Oh my goodness. He's so cute." She said taking him from my hands. "You have to take a picture of us." Paige said handing me her phone. I quickly took a few pictures as Paige held him up next to her showing off there matching out fits.
"Now he just needs a #5 jersey." I said jokingly.
