As Clarke and Lexa made their way back to the pool area, the tension between them had eased, but Clarke's thoughts were still tangled. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was losing control—of her emotions, her friendships, and her life. When they rejoined the group, the atmosphere was noticeably subdued. The others were trying to pretend everything was fine, but the air was thick with the unspoken tension from Clarke's earlier outburst.
Clarke sat down quietly, her mind still racing. She could feel the concerned glances from her friends, especially from Dany, who looked like she wanted to say something but didn't know how to start. Clarke appreciated their concern, but at the same time, it felt suffocating. She hated how they looked at her like she was fragile like she was about to break at any moment.
The night dragged on, and Clarke's patience wore thin. Every laugh, every attempt at normalcy grated on her nerves. It all felt forced like they were just going through the motions to keep things from falling apart. Eventually, the discomfort grew too much to bear.
Suddenly, a minor argument broke out between Oliver and Octavia over something trivial—who was supposed to refill the drinks or some other insignificant detail? Normally, it would've been a laughable moment, easily brushed off, but tonight, it felt like the final straw.
Clarke couldn't take it anymore. The frustration, the anger, the guilt—it all surged up inside her like a wave she couldn't control. Before anyone realized what was happening, Clarke snapped.
"Enough!" she shouted, standing up abruptly. Everyone fell silent, startled by her outburst. Clarke's hands were trembling, her eyes burning with unshed tears. "I can't do this anymore. I can't keep pretending like everything's okay when it's not."
"Clarke, what are you talking about?" Dany asked gently, her voice laced with concern.
Clarke shook her head, her voice thick with emotion. "You all need to stay away from me. I'm serious. I'm... I'm not good for any of you right now. I'm a mess, and I don't want to drag you all down with me."
"Clarke, we're your friends," Lexa said quietly, stepping closer. "You don't have to push us away."
But Clarke was already shaking her head, stepping back from the group. "I can't... I just can't. Please, just... stay away. For your own good."
Without waiting for a response, Clarke turned and walked away, leaving her friends behind. She didn't look back, even as she heard Dany call after her. She knew if she did, she might lose whatever resolve she had left.
The next week at school, Clarke's decision weighed heavily on her. She had been avoiding everyone—Lexa, Dany, Oliver, and the rest. She kept her head down, stuck to her classes, and avoided the places where she knew they'd be, if they called Clarke didn't pick up. She needed space to figure things out on her own, no matter how lonely it made her feel.
One day, as she was walking down the hallway, Clarke spotted Raven waiting by her locker. Raven, who had been one of the few to give her space without asking too many questions, now seemed determined to talk.
"Clarke," Raven called out as she approached. "Can we talk? Please?"
Clarke felt a pang of guilt, but she hardened her resolve. She couldn't let anyone in, not right now. Without even acknowledging Raven, Clarke walked past her, her gaze fixed straight ahead.
"Clarke, come on! Don't do this," Raven pleaded, her voice carrying down the hallway.
But Clarke didn't stop. She couldn't afford to. She kept walking, ignoring the hurt in Raven's voice, ignoring the ache in her chest. Clarke knew she was pushing everyone away, but she convinced herself it was for the best.
As she walked away, she tried to drown out the sound of her doubts and the loneliness that crept into her heart. She had to be strong, even if it meant being alone.
