Chapter 14

"Everyone out!" Talon ordered as soon as we stepped inside La Casa, causing me to cringe in embarrassment at the grand entrance.

I noticed that Camila and Tony had arrived with a man I assumed was their son, and were sitting together on a table whilst Eri manned the counter and Isabelle and Jared were standing in front. They were glaring at the wall, making no attempt to speak to each other.

No-one dared to object when the customers abandoned whatever they were drinking or sinking their teeth into and rushed through the door in fear.

Once it was just the eight of us left, Talon wasted no time in advancing angrily towards Jared. I was quick to hurry forward and place my hand around his forearm in order to stop him from hurting the younger male. The boy couldn't have been older than seventeen.

"You're protecting him?" Talon said to me in a dangerously low voice after he turned his head and looked at me.

"No, I'm stopping you from doing something you'll regret," I corrected him, matching his tone. "Look around you. These aren't the people you want to lose your shit around."

A muscle in Talon's jaw clenched but my words seemed to hit home as he pulled away from me. He surprised me when he stood by my side and placed an arm around around the back of my waist, and I realised he was trying to calm down. Although it was clear from experience that when we were physically close to each other our bodies seemed to relax, I knew it was about more than that for Talon. It was evidently comforting for his mind when he was engulfed in my presence and I was right under his fingertips.

The gesture was a tad ludicrous given our situation but I didn't want to make a scene. I had caused everyone in this coffee shop enough trouble for one day.

"I should kill you," Talon growled at his sister's boyfriend, causing me to roll my eyes.

          "Talon!" Isabelle rebuked.

"I didn't do anything," Jared replied, but it was obvious he was rattled. I couldn't see Talon's face but I could guarantee his expression was not a polite one.

"Exactly. You just watched her walk through the door instead of trying to stop her," Talon argued, and I realised he was referring to me. "What? You don't think that was the first thing Belle told me?"

Jared glanced at Isabelle and a look of guilt flashed in both their irises. They had their own relationship problems to handle without adding me to the equation.

"Don't look at her," Talon warned. "All I ever hear from Belle is that you're trying to make whatever the hell you think you have with her work, and the first thing you do when things go wrong is use Ava as a way of proving a point to me and my sister. And to think that I was going to apologise for accusing you of being involved. Now all I want to do is rip your throat out of your neck."

Jesus, the Rivera's really were a big fan of airing their dirty laundry in public.

"Alright, let's all calm down," I finally intervened, uncomfortable that the tension was over my well-being. When I pulled away from Talon, he tensed so I placed a hand on his chest and stood to the side so both him and the group could see my face, though my words were directed at the former. "If you want someone to blame, blame me. This is my fault."

"No, it's not," Talon insisted. "He knows about all the things that are out there that could hurt you, so if the wolf attacked you, your blood would have been on his hands."
