Chapter 22

"Is the big bad wolf afraid of heights?"

Talon shot me a glare, clearly offended I suggested—teasingly, might I add—that someone of his calibre even had fears. "Of course not. I just need a second to mentally prepare the lie I'm going to tell the judge after we get arrested."

I rolled my eyes. "Don't be so dramatic. I took a risk by agreeing to spend the day with you. Now it's your turn."

"Ava, I would hardly call our do-over a risk. I haven't taken you swimming with sharks."

          "Do-over?"

Talon looked at me like I was slow on the uptake. "This is obviously my way of trying to make up for how disastrous our first date ended up being."

"Oh," I said. And then, "First, this isn't a date. This is two teenagers trying to trespass into a private part of the beach by climbing over a giant wire fence you're afraid of. And second, I personally thought our date was good. I wasn't aware it needed a do-over."

Talon raised both eyebrows. "Are you being serious?"

          "As a car accident."

          "Why?"

"You took me to a secluded part of the woods where you hung up lights on the trees and put candles on the water, and it was beautiful. You brought food and blankets, and there was no awkwardness. I'm not denying that it ended on a bad note and the rest of the night was a mess, but the date itself was great. You did great. And if there's one thing I've learnt recently it's that you should focus on the present. Like climbing over this fence."

Talon was grinning, clearly pleased with my answer. (You could eat cereal out of his dimples if you were desperate enough.) "If we get caught I'm telling them I was under duress. I can't afford to go to jail—Ash might burn the house down if I'm away for longer than a day."

"And if this is your way of trying to prove how macho you are, it's totally working," I responded sarcastically, but it was a jest. "Just FYI."

"I don't need to prove anything. I'm an Alpha. That's as macho as it gets."

          "Uh-huh. Whatever you say, Talon."

"You know, I'm seriously re-thinking whether I should give you a piggyback up the fence."

I snorted. "That's cute. You think I need your help."

"Sorry, I wasn't aware people from California break the law regularly for fun."

          "Me neither."

"I'm serious, Ava. There's still stitches on your leg and a bandage around your hand. I don't want you to put pressure on them."

"I'll be fine, I promise. Come on, live a little." And then my fingers gripped the wired fence and the front of my Vans pointed inside the square gaps as I started climbing expertly. I was only two metres up when I realised Talon's feet were still planted on the sandy ground. He was just staring at me, bewildered and impressed. "Are you just going to stand there and look pretty all day?" I asked him dryly.

He smirked. "You think I'm pretty?"

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, yeah, you're gorgeous. Now stop being a baby and get up here."

Talon did as told, weaving his fingers through the wired squares before climbing up until we were both hanging on, right by each other's side. "Race you," was all Talon said, not even waiting for my response before making his way up the fence in lightning speed.
