Chapter 17

Surprisingly, the opposite side of town was noticeably different than the part where Talon and Co. resided, and La Casa was situated. Though trees still outnumbered people, there was less of a small-town vibe, and more city-like hustle and bustle. I had already encountered a mall and a five star restaurant in the short amount of time I had chosen to spend as a proper tourist upon seeking temporary refuge here.

It was clear that Pine Hill was a large diverse town therefore the opposing werewolf packs, one of which I had probably almost been initiated into courtesy of a trio of blue-eyed nineteen-year-olds, happily lived different lifestyles.

After walking out of the coffee shop two days ago, I ended up stumbling across a three-storey motel miles away. I spent the rest of that day trying to catch shut-eye, and when I used the guest's phone to call Xavier the following morning, I found out that he had decided to take a forty odd hour road trip here instead of waiting around for a flight.

The universe clearly did not want me to leave and the Gods were obviously conspiring against me. Camila and Tony may have been onto something when they offered fate as an explanation for Talon and I's messed up situation. I still thought it was all a cosmic joke.

Nevertheless, I decided to keep busy by spending that day safely exploring the local hotspots. But when I woke up this morning with the intention of leaving the motel as I had run out of cash, which I'd need for however many more nights I had to remain in Pine Hill (like I had initially promised) until my brother got here, my suitcase and backpack were by the bed. Clearly someone had been in my room whilst I was sleeping. Knowing that it had to have been either Talon, Ashton or Cruz made my skin crawl.

No matter how hard I had been trying, and despite going more than twenty-four hours without seeing them, I could not get them out of my head. Their faces, their voices, their home, Talon and I's date, the tornado of emotions they made me feel in the short amount of time I had been forced to spend in their company; it was all a constant reminder of what was lurking around the corner no matter how far I walked away.

A reminder of what could have been.

I stepped out the shower and wrapped a towel under my arms and around my body. When I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I was glad that I looked better than I felt. My already tan skin was developing into a richer bronze, my eyes were a brighter green, and there was no permanently raised eyebrow. To anyone that didn't know me, I was a carefree teenager enjoying her summer vacation.

Once I was dressed in black shorts, an olive green t-shirt that I tied in a knot at one side and a pair of black ankle boots, I styled my hair half up, half down with golden strands framing my make-up free face, grabbed my backpack and left the room.

I went downstairs to the reception to leave my room keys with Frankie, the middle-aged man who worked the desk and had been nothing but friendly to me since I had arrived here desperately. Even though a voice at the back of my head warned me that I couldn't trust anyone and he was probably a werewolf as well, being in denial was more convenient.

I mean, I wasn't about to sleep on the streets. Especially when they were crawling with supernatural creatures.

"Morning," I greeted Frankie with a polite smile, handing over the keys for him to look after whilst I was out.

Frankie didn't return the smile. In fact, he could barely look me in the eye. He just took the keys and visibly swallowed in a nervous gesture. Weird.
