I gripped my chest begging for another beat. Begging to feel the blood pump through me. Begging for the only warmth i had felt in years to come back and comfort me again. I stayed this way for 10 minutes clutching my heart so hard my fingernails cut through my shirt and into my skin. I pulled my hand away and set it on my lap not daring to look at it. I knew that there would be the thick black slime on my fingers that was always there when I got cut. I finally forced myself to look at my pale hand and what I saw sparked hope into me again.

Instead of thick slime my fingers were specked with thin red blood. I touched my shirt and felt that it was slightly wet from the leaking cuts I had inflicted upon myself. The boy began to shift the leaves he was sleeping on crackled under his weight. A few minutes later he picked himself up and wiped dried tears from his tired blue eyes. When I looked at him i felt a spark of hope. Maybe by the time I found a place for him I would be fully human again and be able to stay with him. This thought brought what I hoped to be a smile to my face.

I reached up to my to touch my cheek and only felt cold dead skin. I frowned again remembering what I really was. The boy walked over to me and grabbed my hand. I stood up and we made our way slowly back to the path we had started to follow the day before. The boy tripped over several protruding tree roots, but I caught him before he fell. He mumbled his thanks and he tightened his grip on my hand. We finally made it back to the worn down path and continued our trek. The boy told me stories about his family.

Some of his stories were so far fetched I wasn't sure if I could believe him, but I listened anyways. Finally he told me his name. He said it slowly and quietly. I didn't have an idea why he was so shy to tell me but I didn't press him. I couldn't even if I wanted to. I said his name over and over in my head and tried mouthing it. Getting the feel of it. Finally I stuttered out my first word in years, "D-David."
