I looked into the mirror and couldn't understand that the person staring back at me was... me. The blue and grey sweater itched my arms and sides, but I thought that this was worth the sacrafice for how cute it looked. My hair was curled for once and pulled back with an electric-ly too-blue ribbon. I always said that I hated wearing skirts, but grabbed one from the store stock despite that.
All of this for a guy?
"I've changed my mind," I said abruptly, turning to Darcie and Mary.
They put a pause on their gossip, sitting sprawled out across Mary's bed. Neither of them had started to get ready for T.J-Hank's party yet-- Mary kept insisting that it would only take her a few minutes to change and bedazzle herself. Minutes she'd be able to count on two hands, at most.
I took in a deep breath, and yanked the ribbon out of my hair. It came out easily-- no tugs or yanking.
"I'm not going."
"What?!"
"Why not???"
I could understand their protests. T.J's party is all that Mary had been looking forward to since Monday, and when Claire said that she wasn't interested in it, I volunteered myself to go with them. A trio substitute when the original recipe was unable to bake it.
So the looks of shock (and minor hint of betrayal from Mary) I could understand.
"Look at me right now, girls. I look ridiculous!!" I grumbled, pinching the ends of the blue skirt.
Mary rolled off of the side of her bed and hopped to my side.
"No! No! You don't look ridiculous, you look cute! You hardly ever get dressed up. What else to dress fancy for other than a party?"
"A wedding?" Darcie guessed, tapping her finger to her chin.
Mary shot our friend an unamused glance over her shoulder. "Who do we know in our grade that's getting married, Darc? Seriously!"
"Sorrry." Darcie huffed, picking up one of the stray magazines lying around the room.
Mary turned back to me, and turned me around to face the mirror once again. She took the ribbon carefully from my hand and pulled back my hair.
"You don't look ridiculous. Why would you think that, hun?"
"Look again. I don't like wearing skirts, I never wear makeup-- especially this much of the stuff. And it feels way too much like I'm just trying too hard."
"I thought you liked having me do your makeup." Mary muttered, focusing on retying the ribbon up.
"Not like this."
Darcie gasped softly from her spot on the bed, and set the magazine down from her face. "This wouldn't happen to be about that cute guy from Arcadia Oaks Academy, would it?"
"Oh yeah! That hunk. I did hear that Tight-Jeans-Hank's party tonight was inclusive of other schools in town."
"Yeah," Darcie hummed, "Now that I think about it, I did think that it was a bit out of character for you to buy a new skirt just for a one-day social thing."
I covered my face with my hands and groaned. "I don't know what I'm even doing."
Mary sighed. When she finished putting the ribbon in my hair, she went to the large closet in her bedroom and pulled a different shirt and pair of leggings from hangars. "Here." She tossed them to me.
"You can borrow these for tonight. They still might be a bit fancy compared to what you usually wear, but they're not that ugly sweater and a skirt."
"UGLY??!" I gasped, "If you thought it was ugly, why wouldn't you tell me!?"
I caught the spare clothes and Mary laughed.
"Hun, you don't venture outside of your bubble as it is! I figured that if I said anything, you'd never attempt to try it again!!"
Darcie nodded her head. "Mary has a point on that one. Sorry!"
I shook my head at them both and went to the bathroom to get changed. As I was in there, Mary knocked gently on the door and nagged through the wall.
"You can borrow my stuff tonight, but you better keep that ribbon in your hair!! I didn't re-do it for nothing, B-T-dubs!!"
All of this. For a guy?
Well, regardless of whatever happens tonight, at least I know that I'll have Darcie and Mary there for me.
Who am I kidding, I'll have Darcie. (Mary won't be available for the rest of the night the second that she sees T.J-Hank at the party.)
