If you don't know what the show is about a boy and his dog and they go on crazy adventures. There has been one that is like the one I'm doing today. The one that is commonly known is that Finn is in a Coma.
My idea is that it is just a child's imagination. Think about it. Children have a wild and vivid imagination. Finn always lives and is there any kid who doesn't want there animal to talk so that would explain Jake. As he grows up there is more mature things happening like he gets some love interests and more action. Finn also ages so that may link to that. Most children would look at Werewolves and Vampires early on (Thanks to Hotel Transylvania) so that is where Marceline is from and what kid doesn't like Candy so this child would place it in.
Adventure Time is a bit complex with all the Plots and Sub-plots but this gives them the ideas. The main plot is about Finn and Jake. Some Sub-Plots are: Marceline and Ice King, Ice King's old girlfriend, The Great Mushroom War and The Lich.
