Chapter 19 - Nights In, Nights Out
--
----------------------------------------------

"Mind telling me where you learned to hotwire a motorbike?"

"Tyler taught me!" Jace grins, excitedly.

"Tyler? As in Tyler, Erica's boyfriend?"

"The one and only."

"The sweet, innocent guy I went to middle school with?"

"Yes, Cal."

"Well I never."

"Yeah, he's not as good as he makes himself out to be," Jace shrugs, tugging some wires together.

"Almost done?" I ask, scanning the parking lot for people. Jace told me to be 'lookout'. The lookout for what, I'm not sure, but I'm assuming it has something to do with the cops, or a big muscly guy with tattoos. Either way, I'd better not mess up.

"Two seconds," he mumbles, holding something between his teeth.

"Okay, hurry," I whine.

"I'm going as fast as I can!"

"Well hurry! I'm dying here," I say. "This is so tense."

"It wasn't until you said it was."

"Not true, you can literally feel the tension. Heck, you can, like, taste it. You can smell it. You can pretty much scrape the tension off of this car and throw it around! It's so tens-" I'm cut off by the roar of an engine, and the shouts of Jace to get on the motorbike. I don't hesitate before jumping on. I clamp my arms around Jace's waist, holding myself on tightly, past caring if my dress isn't covering my butt.

Did I mention that this is my first time on a motorbike?

"Jace, I've changed my mind, let's not do thi-"

"Shut up, Cal," Jace says, revving the engine. The large piece of metal beneath me lurches forward in one swift, confident move, and before I know it, we're speeding off, the wind whipping my tangled hair off of my face.

It's the most frightening, exhilarating, liberating, terrifying, freeing thing I've ever done.

We speed down the road, Jace knowing our route after spending an hour figuring out the best way. We haven't yet mentioned how we managed to get here in the first place, but I think we're just going to forget about it. Jace is a bit stressed about this whole situation.

I never thought I'd be the type of girl to ride a motorbike. Hell, I never thought I'd move out at seventeen - almost eighteen - and stay with my best friend. I never thought I'd get a tattoo, or go to parties, or stay out all night, or split my lip open on a rollercoaster. I never thought I'd do any of this... until Jace and I started talking again. I never thought I'd get detention, steal a motorcycle, or skinny dip.

I never thought I'd fall in love after Chase.

But, as I've come to realise, sometimes good things come to those who wait, and no matter how much bad stuff happened, Jace helped me pull through.

Jace helped me find myself again.

And now all I have to do is tell him that.

"It's about freakin' time!"

"Yeah, yeah, we know!" I shout, gingerly climbing off the dormant bike. I swing one leg over, holding Jace's shoulder to steady myself, and jump down. "Wa-ahhh!" What I don't account for is the fact that spending two hours on a motorbike literally kills your butt. My legs turn to jelly, and I fall to the ground.

"Callie?" Jace asks, helping me up. "Are you alright?"

"Fine, my ass is numb," I complain, rubbing my hip that hit the ground when I lost my balance.
