Remus tried to talk James, Sirius, and Peter out of going with him on the full moons on various occasions. He couldn't bear the thought of accidentally hurting one of his friends and only stopped when Sirius put a silencing charm on him and told him that any amount of hurt Remus could do to them could never amount to the magnitude of Remus's pain. And that sharing his burden or helping him in making it lighter was the least they could do.
