10: an invitation

Percy raised an eyebrow. "Er, one question, before I read this?"

"Yeah?" The stranger didn't look up; he only kept prodding the fire with his pink umbrella.

"Why are you putting a pink umbrella in the fire?"

The stranger looked down at the umbrella, surprised as if he had just noticed it was there. He looked back at Percy with a mischievous twinkle in his beady eyes, his smile hidden by his beard. "Why don't yeh look in yer letter? I'll tell you after, how 'bout that?"

At that moment Harry looked up, his eyes wide with astonishment. "I don't believe you."

The stranger was confused. "Don't believe me 'bout what?"

Exasperated, Harry said, "That I'm a wizard."

Percy's eyes widened and looked down at his letter. On the back it said,

The Sea

The address had changed from the last letter he had seen. It was made of the same thick parchment and the ink was still emerald green. On the other side of the envelope was a red wax seal. It was a coat of arms with an eagle, a badger, a lion, and a snake surrounding a capital letter H. He slowly tore through the seal, being careful not to ruin the design too much. Inside the envelope, there were two pieces of parchment, both made of the same type of parchment as the envelope and decorated with the same emerald green ink. The first piece of parchment said:

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore

(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)

Dear Mister Jackson,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You will find an enclosed list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1st, and we await your owl by no later than July 31st.

Percy frowned. So he was going to go to a school called Pigfarts, where he would learn how to do magic tricks. Interesting. He pulled out the second piece of parchment and read that one. It said:

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Uniform

First-year students will require:

- Three sets of plain work robes (black)

- One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear

- One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar)

- One winter cloak (black, with silver fastenings)

Please note that all students' clothing should carry name tags.
