"I'm scared, Alex."
"Don't be scared."
"We haven't found water yet and I'm probably gonna die."
"Don't. Freaking. Die."
The initial attack wasn't so bad. The spider like creature did scratch Nick quite a bit, leaving deep cuts on most of his body. And his leg got twisted when he got thrown to the ground because of Alex's retaliation. But it wasn't bad enough to make Nick pass out, and Alex had bandaged him up quite well. But it was four hours later and the sun was setting. Nick's energy was draining.
Alex noticed that Nick was straggling a few feet behind him. Once it was dark, this would be a horrible way to travel.
"Hey, Nicky, want me to carry you?"
"No-- I'm good!"
"Can you maybe walk a bit faster?"
"Okay!"
Nick was actually able to walk pretty fast, although every few minutes he would slow down to regain some of his lost energy. But suddenly, Nick stopped walking and looked up at Alex, who noticed that the bandages on his legs had blood splotches on them.
"Nick, answer me. Are you okay?"
"I-I don't know."
"Do you want me to carry you now?"
"Yeah. Yeah."
"Okay."
"Just a warning, if something comes to attack us, I might have to drop you."
Alex could easily carry Nick. The only problem was that he had to keep his sword in his right hand, but couldn't because of Nick. It stayed in the backpack, which wasn't safe or easily accessible.
"I hate to tell you this, really, but I don't know how we're going to keep going when we get to the cabin. I'm pretty sure Bob and Paul are already there. I'm not sure about Parker and Andy. Past there... We'll all be together... But you, Nicky... You'll be so vulnerable..."
"Chill out, Lexxo! I-I can fight!"
"Can you, though? You could barely walk!"
Nick sighed and looked up at Alex.
"Told ya."
After a few more, luckily peaceful, hours of walking towards the base, Alex had found a soft patch on the ground where he and Nick could rest for a few minutes before heading west again.
"I don't know how you're so strong, Nick."
"What do you mean? You carried me! I did nothing!"
"You stayed alive and positive. If I were in your position I would honestly just throw myself off the nearest cliff for the benefit of the group. But I like how you think. You're an optimist."
"Yeah, I guess I'm quite the optimist. Heh. Once all of this heals up, I'll be good for fighting. Maybe Bob would have something. He always does."
